Ignorance Is Not So Bliss #1

This is a new section that i’m starting up. It’s sole purpose is for me to be able to post things that i’ve meant to post about in the previous month (November this time) but couldn’t fit in or forgot about etc.

I’ll do an “Ignorance Is Not So Bliss” at some point during the first week of every month from now on. They’ll contain all sorts of stuff from videos and songs to stories and pictures.

As usual just right click and save as to download the MP3s

First up are Aussie electro pop kings Cut Copy. Back in July i posted the bands first teaser track titled “Where I’m Going” from their upcoming new album “Zonoscope” which is pencilled in for a release a week before Valentines Day next year. Oh the romance!

Well the synth loving boys have gave us another little reminder of their talent for providing funky basslines that make us want to dance till our feet turn into dust. “Take Me Over” is their latest offering and is confirmed to appear on the album.

The album cover features a picture of  a waterfall flooding New York city. The artwork is courtesy of Tsunehisa Kimura.

MP3: Cut Copy – Take Me Over

As if you needed a reminder of what these guys can do to your dance floor ego….you do? Ok then.

—————————————————————————–

Next up is yet another new track. This time it’s a demo from Alex Shields and his band A Grave With No Name. This new track “Streams” sticks very much in the same vein as debut album “Mountain Debris”. That angelic voice, all the vocal harmonies, the lo-fi almost underwater like sound effects. I’ve always thought that A Grave With No Name sounded like they recorded their songs in a swimming pool. This is no bad thing by the way. The new demo also reminds me of that kinda alternative americana/indie scene of Band of Horses and Grand Archives. Again, no bad thing.

I can imagine “Streams” playing whilst sitting next to a log fire in a cabin up in a snowy forest in the north of Scotland.

MP3: A Grave With No Name – Streams (Demo)

——————————————————————————–

Now for a remix and some very exciting news concerning lots of remixes!  The band in question are the phenomenal O.Children….

Up until the other week i had only heard 3 remixes of O.Children. Two amazing if not slightly creepy remixes of “Ruins” courtesy of Drop The Lime and Jokers of the Scene respectively and a remix of “Dead Disco Dancer” by the go-to-if-you-wanna-be-cool electroids The Golden Filter.

But that was then and this is now! I recently discovered a remix of “Fault Line” floating about online. It’s one of my favourite tracks on the album along with “Heels”.

MP3: O.Children – Fault Line (Shuttle remix)

As if these remixes aren’t enough we’re being spoiled with a whole albums worth of remixes set to be released a week this Monday. I’ve already pre-ordered mine  here. Seeing as there’s only 1000 copies available you probably should too.

Here’s the tracklist in full.

1. Fault Line (Canblaster remix)
2. Heels (Chad Valley)
3. Don’t Dig (Joe & Will Ask remix)
4. Fault Line (Shuttle remix)
5. Heels (Melé remix)
6. Dead Disco Dancer (The Golden Filter remix)
7. Heels (AC Slater remix)
8. Ruins (Heartbreak remix)
9. Heels (Mugwump remix)
10. Ruins (Drop The Lime remix)
11. Don’t Dig (Jam Factory remix)
12. Ruins (Jokers Of The Scene remix)

—————————————————————–

Next up is another remix. The Bloody Beetroots are one of the most remixed acts in the blogosphere. Everyone and their dog has had a go at remixing and mashing them up. The list of remixers ranges from professional DJ’s to bedroom DJ’s to music geeks like me. The track “Warp” in all it’s different guises is one of the most popular choices for potentail remixers and it was been dissected, put back together again, spliced up and splattered all over our ears more times than i can say “Woop Woop!”……BUT one style i’ve never heard anyone tackle with The Bloody Beetroots is the issue of dubstep. Until Dirtyphonics braved it….

MP3: The Bloody Beetroots feat Steve Aoki – Warp (Dirtyphonics remix)

Don’t worry i’m not gonna use one of those “dirrtyy as…” or “filthhyyy as….” quotes that all those “dubstep wankers” on YouTube seem to love so much but my my just listen to that drop around 50 odd seconds in. As The Cool Kids would say, “Awesome“.

————————————————————————————-

Well we’re on the subject of remixes/mash ups…

Last month Gregg Gillies AKA Girl Talk released his 5th album proper titled “All Day”. Just like his 4 previous albums and 2 EP’s , “All Day” is made up entirely of samples from other artists song. The guy is a one man copyright assaulting legend and i love him for it!

Also, just like all his previous releases, “All Day” is available on the website Illegal Art. But unlike the rest of his discography, which when released were described as pay-what-you-want, this album is free free free! See, now before people could choose whether or not they wanted a Girl Talk album for nothing or whether or not they wanted to donate 5op or £50 to the cause. This time he’s just said “Hey, take the fucking thing, it’s yours, go on, download it. What? Money? Nah, it’s cool. I love you guys”. Or something like that anyway.

If you haven’t already then you can download your copy here and get full info and tracklisting/samples used here.

MP3: Girl Talk – Get It Get It

——————————————————————-

Next, we move on to some new music, well for me anyway.

Yes, i’m sure there are more than a few people out there who have heard of and love “Slow Runner” (they have been around since 2004 after all) but i only just randomly and fortuitously discovered them last month. I haven’t stopped listening since.

The track i happened across was “Make You Love Me” which instantly reminded me of The Postal Service and Akron/The Family Band mangled heartbreakingly together while Dave Bazan nods in agreement in the background.

MP3: Slow Runner – Make You Love Me

They’re not just all glitchy bleeps and “love me” lyrics though. They also have a more “traditional” side of indie guitar strummingness.

————————————————————————-

Lastly we come to the noise duo revivalists Civil Civic. These two well travelled dudes have been busting their asses touring all sorts of cities recently and they arrive in Glasgow on the 13th of December to play a show at the best cult venue in town, The 13th Note.

As a nice little pre-Christmas gift and to build the anticipation of their live shows they’ve given us a nice shiny new track “Lights On A Leash”. It starts off like The Cure swooning over Johnny Marr’s fretboard before the inevitable Civil Civic fuzzy love time kicks in and takes over. Drum beats tick like a deranged squirrel trying to crack a nut and there are sounds in there that remind me of “Just Like You Imagined” by Nine Inch Nails and that is one of the best compliments i can pay these two noise rebels. They’re definitely one of my favourite, if not THE favourite, finds of 2010. I’m looking forward to the 13th in the 13th.

MP3: Civil Civic – Lights On A Leash (Live @ Cargo, London)

I’ve included a live version of “C27” (the b-side) for download but you can buy the actual single here. Go on, it’s only 50p you tight bastards! What else are you gonna buy with that? A fudge and a packet of pickled onion Space Raiders?

On second thoughts…….i am quite hungry. I wonder if the shop’s still open?

THE MONDAY LIST #24: Fuckity Fuck Fuck

Apparently, i swear too fucking much…

According to friends i use the word “fuck” way too much in every day life.

Examples i’ve been given…

A. “That’s fucking amazing!”
B. “What the fuck was that all about?”
C. “Did you fucking see that?!
D. “I’m fucked, man.”
E. “Fuckin hell!”
F(uck).
G. “Fuuuuuuuuuuuck!”

Obviously i use other swear words but apparently “fuck” and it’s various usages are my favourite. So here’s a fucking Monday List with a twist. Well make that two Monday Lists for the price of one. I had so much fucking fun making up a List with “fuck” in the song title that i thought i’d make another one up with swear words/insults in the bands name.

Fuck This List
——————–
MP3’s
1. McLusky – Fuck This Band

I thinking swearing is maybe a Scottish trait and is in our blood. We don’t mean any harm or offence by it. It’s just crept it’s way into out day to day language. We just fucking embrace it i suppose.

And lastly, my hero…

Live @ Eclecticity 2010 Parts 1 and 2

So tonight i can finally get round to uploading my set from Eclecticity last month. I blame Chris for taking so long! Although to be fair he has done a really good job of converting the set and keeping the audio quality at a good level (it’s around 260 kbps). Before anyone gets the wrong idea and thinks this is actually the live gig audio, it’s not. It hasn’t been a miked up recording and caught audience noise, buzzing bass and crackly beats and all the other crap that comes along with it. No, what he done was simply record my set through Traktor while i was playing . So it’s a perfect, clear and audible version. Anyone who uses Traktor will know that it only deals in wav files when it comes to the recording function so these files have been converted to MP3 and Chris has very kindly chopped what was a 4 hour set into 1 hour or so sections. This will allow me to burn them onto discs and also make downloads easier.

Imagine None Of This Is Real…..

First off apologies for the lack of any posts in the last week or so. I haven’t been anywhere near the computer since last Friday night. The lack of free time has been due to various reasons/happenings. Sleep deprivation being the main one. My insomnia seems to just come and go without warning. Some nights i could feel sleepy at half 10 and just conk out and sleep right through till the morning. Other nights i can’t sleep at all and worst of all some nights i get broken sleep. I hate that the most, there’s nothing worse than falling asleep at 3am and then waking up every 30 minutes or so and then going to work at 8am. I’ll need to look into something that can help me with this, if anybody has any ideas let me know. Right now i’ve just been using a little Spotify playlist that i made up, it’s been kinda working i suppose but more on that another day (i’ll post some tracks off it soon). Let’s talk about the weekend just past.

Before i start on the good stuff though, i caught heed of some bad news on Sunday night. I’d like to express my disbelief at the tragic events that took place at Pukkelpop festival in Belgium over the weekend where Charlie Haddon, lead singer of the London synth band Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, sadly took his own life. The full story and exact details don’t seem to have emerged yet but it seems that a crowd surf attempt from a member of the band went badly wrong, some say Haddon made the attempt whilst others have stated that Joe Hutchinson actually jumped into the crowd. Either way, the outcome is one of absolute shock. A girl was seriously injured in the botched stage dive and the members of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool were besides themselves with worry and grief. It’s believed they thought the girls injuries were so serious that she may be paralysed. Obviously there is no way any damage was intended by the band, it was just a dreadful accident. But the 3 band members apparently argued furiously backstage after their set and in the hours afterwards Haddon decided to take his own life. The really tragic thing is that the girl injured in the stage dive is expected to make a full recovery.

It’s such a loss of amazing talent for a band who were definitely on their way to something big. Their debut album was due out in October which they were then set to follow with their first UK headline tour.

My heart goes out to Charlie Haddons family and the band members. My thoughts and condolences are with you all.

The lyrics in this particular track are astonishingly eerie/haunting considering all things.

MP3: Ou Est Le Swimming Pool – Outside

The tracks that they are probably best known for are “Dance The Way I Feel” (featured in my Best of 2009 section if you wanna hear it, if you haven’t already) and “Jacksons Last Stand”.

R.I.P Charlie Haddon

Moving away from the sombre mood, i was out for Luisa’s birthday on Saturday night, it was a good night, a really good night. So good in fact that i spent the next day wallowing in my own self pity. Suffering from the hangover of all hangovers. Though to be fair i did manage to somehow make it through back home to visit my parents and sister. Although i imagine i wouldn’t have been much fun as i just moped around moaning about having a sore head and hairy teeth (dry mouth from too much alcohol for those unaware of that term) whilst constantly complaining about the adverts on TV being too loud. Yes, i’m a grumpy Sunday boy, especially if i’ve been out the night before.

Luisa’s 20th was marked in traditional Glasgow style…..drink as many shots as humanly possible and dance yer bum off. Which everyone did…..well, from what i can remember anyway.

Here’s the birthday girl being taken hostage by my right arm….

I absolutely love that expression! And the Cure t-shirt. Which reminds me. I want THIS

And here’s Luisa with her boyfriend/one of my best friends, Gordon/The G Man/Bubbles.

Take note of Gordons totally non ironic Tina Turner t-shirt. I really can’t give him too much verbal over it…..we both bought tshirts for 3 euros each in a bargain bin at ROCK AM in Germany a few years back, Tina was his pick…..what did i get?….a Michael Jackson (Dangerous Tour) one. My head is bowed right now. In shame. Fashion shame.

Here’s a few more links..

Luisa’s blog littlenihilist

Gordon’s band Damnable Contraption….let’s call it experimental art shall we? Songs about smelly genitalia. You have been warned!

As a little birthday extra (even though it is like 4 days late!) here’s a few of Luisa’s fave artists/tracks.

MP3: Death Cab For Cutie – Photobooth

MP3: Bright Eyes – Lua

MP3: Elliott Smith – Angeles

MP3: Jimmy Eat World – Sweetness

MP3: Bloody Beetroots – Domino

By the way Luisa, if you’re reading this, that last track is yet another hint at something we’ve spoke about since May………geez back my Bloody Beetroots t-shirt!

Also, not sure if you’re aware of this or not but you have the “privilege ” of this being Number 1 in the charts when you were born…..

Happy Birthday (again) Luisa xx 🙂

Lastly, i had to turn down a ticket for the Eels gig at the Glasgow Academy last night.

1. I’m running low on funds till payday, which is next Tuesday.
2. I was absolutely shattered (see top of post for insomnia explanation)
3. I was working till 7pm so it would’ve probably been a mad rush to get home and make it back in time for the gig.

Ah excuses, excuses!!

Don’t look so sad, i didn’t mean it, can you ever forgive me Mr Everett?!

MP3: Eels – Looking-Up

You Can’t Teach Rhythm

This is the last mixtape of 2009 and is largely made up of songs that i played at the Halloween show in D.U.S.K back in October. It doesn’t really need an explaining, its just a straight ahead club/dancefloor type mix. It starts off slowly with a number (pardon the pun) that was aimed to get girls and boys on the dancefloor. It worked at the club that night so put it on at a New Years or Christmas party this year and see if it has the same effect. I decided to splice and cut the whole mix with some radio segments and audio samples i found kicking about online, i was contemplating using them during the gig but thought best not to incase i interrupted the flow of the music. I liked the idea of using segments and speach samples cos it reminded of my favourite album of all time, Songs For The Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age. The rest of the mix is just some glitchy, techno, electro songs that i enjoy. I put a few beats and bleeps into certain songs to try and maintain that live feel that i got during the gig.

If you download this mix i’d definitely recommend playing it at full volume for full effect.

Masquerading Meddling Musicians

With Halloween just around the corner i thought it’d be a good idea to do a post about bands and artists that hide behind sweaty masks, helmets and other head fitting objects whilst plying their trade up on the stage.

Is it for “artisctic” reasons or are they just ugly? Who knows?….Who cares? Let’s be honest, it looks fucking cool if you can pull it off right (take note guys from Slipknot!) and it adds mystery.

So, Halloween lovers, i’d like you to meet….

toxic avenger

The Toxic Avenger

The Toxic Avenger (aka Simon DeLacroix) is a French DJ who puts his focus on making scratch based tracks blended with melody. He usually releases material through the well respected (well i respect them anyway) record label iheartcomix.
MP3: The Toxic Avenger – Superheroes (Toxic Self Version)

bloody beetroots

Bloody Beetroots

What can i say about The Bloody Beetroots that i haven’t said before on this blog? Nothing, thats what. Two absolutely insame Italian DJ’s with a taste for wonky basslines and having fun. What more could we want?
MP3: Bloody Beetroots – Rombo (feat Congorock)

mstrkrft

MSTRKRFT

MSTRKRFT came about while JFK (thats Jesse F Keeler to those unaware) was still playing with Death From Above 1979. Originally started out as a “dancier techno group but NOT a side-project”,  MSTRKRFT succeeded in evolving into a totally different beast after the unfortunate break up of DFA1979. And although i was gutted to say the least when one of my favourite bands of all time broke up, it makes it that little bit easier that we were gifted with some amazing new sounds.
MP3: MSTRKFT – Heartbreaker (feat John Legend)

dead mau5

Deadmau5

Joel Zimmerman or Deadmau5 to you and i is a DJ and producer from Canada who just released his very successful debut album last year. The 28 year old had been on the scene for some years beforehand and began making digitalised music at a very early age. If you go see him play you certainly won’t miss him….he wears an absolutely giant modified Mouse hat/mask/helmet.
MP3: Deadmau5 – I Remember

sound of animals fighting

The Sound of Animals Fighting

Sadly this supergroup don’t exist anymore, they called it a day after providing us with 3 albums and a DVD. The group consisted mainly of member of RX Bandits but over the course of their 5 year life contributers included members of Finch, Atreyu, The Autumns and many more. The music world is a less frenetic place without them, that’s a compliment by the way.
MP3: The Sound Of Animals Fighting – Uzbekistan

The Knife

The Knife

Swedish duo The Knife found the big time when Jose Gonzalez done a cover of their song “Heartbeats” and got it featured in THAT Sony advert. That song featured on the album “Silent Shout” , the siblings have since released another album and Karen Dreijer Andersson has went on to release a well acclaimed solo album under the name Fever Ray. Check it out if you can. The Knife are definitely a band that have to be seen live to truly experience the mysterious energy the have in their songs.
MP3: The Knife – We Share Our Mothers Health

redshape

Redshape

Not much is known about the enigma that is Redshape. He’s released 15 maybe 17 tracks maximum over the last few years. Apparently he lives in Berlin but who knows. Redshape is a classic case of a man keeping himself to himself.
MP3: Redshape – Seduce Me

HeartsRevolution

HeartsRevolution

This electro twosome gained notoriety in 2008 not only for their song but also for the HeartsChallenger. the HeartsChallenger is a modified ice cream van that they two used and still do occasionally use to move between gigs. A different take on a tourbus so to speak but i know what i’d rather have. I’ve followed them since late 2007 and annoyingly they didn’t seem to be making any progress or releasing solid material BUT there’s news in the pipeline of a 13 track album coming soon, so it’s all good.
MP3: HeartsRevolution – Choose Your Own Adventure

Daft Punk

Daft Punk

The classic Daft Punk. Call them what you will, “sellouts”, “song thieves”, whatever but the one thing that constantly follows the French robots about is that they were one the pioneers of  French House music and helped get it to where it currently sits in the popularity stakes. Yes, they may steal samples left, right and centre to make their songs but who cares when they make songs as good as “Robot Rock”, “Da Funk” etc
MP3: Daft Punk – Da Funk

Scan 7

Scan 7

Another unknown entity, literally, i have no knowledge of who these guys are or where they come from. I’m guessing Berlin but only cos of the type of songs they seem to produce.
MP3: Scan 7 – Bad Mood Rising

the network

The Network

The Network is a classic case of a famous band trying to create an alter ego and fucking it up royally. Before they had even released anything everybody knew who they were, it’s Green Day in disguise! Back in the days when i read Kerrang (yes, i’m ashamed) there was an article outing them and when the songs were released it only confirmed what was already known. Billie Joe Armstrong has one of the most distinctive voices in music, who were they trying to fool?
MP3: The Network – Roshambo

doctor lektroluv

Dr Lektroluv

The Doc is a Belgian DJ with a rather dapper and eccentric stage persona. Not only does he wear a tuxedo and a green mask on stage, he also mixes his sets with the assistance of a telephone instead of the usual headphones. He’s been around since the early noughties and releases several mixes on the N.E.W.S label.
MP3: Dr Lektroluv – Moscow Discow

Altern8

Altern8

Haha, god, Altern8, the bass heavy rave monsters. Famed for there chemical suits and face masks the Stafford duo had a habit of playing at “illegal” rave parties back in the early 90’s. At a time when such events were banned, Altern8 made a name for themsleves by being bolshy and grabbing the scene by the throat, they changed the rave scene with their new outlook on equipment and tools that managed to make anthems out of a few beats and a synth line.
MP3: Altern8 – Frequency (DFRNT Remix)

kill the noise

Kill The Noise

Ok so these guys probably shouldn’t be in here as only one of them usually wears a mask onstage and sometimes not at all but “Pull My Strings” is too good a song to leave out.
MP3: Kill The Noise – Pull My Strings

I couldn’t come to the conclusion without adding some real love them or hate them bands into the mix….

thelocust

The Locust

These absolute mentalists, led by Justin Pearson, have a real penchant for some very strange song titles indeed. With songs usually lasting no more than a minute and a half they are short, sharp and definitely to the point. I’ve seen them live twice. Both times they were supporting other acts. I didn’t know whether to feel priviliged or violated when i experienced them live but i was intrigued to say the least.
MP3: The Locust – Priest With Sexually Transmitted Disease Get Out Of My Bed

slipknot

Slipknot

Some people hate Slipknot, some love them. I sit on the fence, they don’t bother me. I always go by my belief that every single band/artist has one good song in them and there are two Slipknot songs that i happen to quite enjoy, one being “Wait and Bleed” and the other…
MP3: Slipknot – Left Behind

Now, to finish off the man who has been portrayed in film and theatre by many a mere mortal..the one and only…

phantom

The Phantom Of The Opera

And the conclusion? Simple, masks are cool. Especially at this time of year.

Bloody Awesome

I think i may have been going  slightly overboard with my love of The Bloody Beetroots at the moment but believe me they justify my love (no Madonna pun intended).

bbroots

The Italian duo finally got round to releasing their debut album “Romborama” on the 21st August. It features a good mix of new tracks, live favourites and some songs from their earlier EPs. The first single was Cornelius, followed by Warp 1.9 (which i posted in an earlier blog) and now they’re releasing “Awesome” which features vocals from The Cool Kids. It’s definitely one of the most commercially viable songs on the album and could see them finally break onto “popular” daytime radio. The Bloody Beetroots have, however, scratched the surface of the mainstream before, after all, they did of course gain notoriety for their brilliant remix of Timbaland “Miscommunication” and have since done a selection of remixes for a diverse list of artsits including the likes and dislikes of Robyn, The Kills, All American Rejects, Wu Tang Clan, The Killers, Benny Benassi and Alpabeat and many many more. But “Awesome” could hopefully see them take that next step and break out of the underground.

Here’s the new promo video for “Awesome”

There’s a lot of people who prefer bands/DJ’s that they like to stay underground/unknown (for whatever reason) and as soon as they get radio airplay these “fans”  will accuse them of “selling out” but i’m not one of those types. If the Beetroots make it big it’s because they deserve to and because their music and production skills are THAT good. Best of luck to them.

Fucked From Above Since 1985

Bloody Beetroots
Inside a warm, dark club, lit only by the random bursts of neon lights/flames that shoot across the roof, lurks shiny turntables and some huge fucking speakers. Behind those turntables lurk two men dressed in Venom masks poised and ready to go…….. Welcome to The Bloody Beetroots @ Death Disco…..

Bob Rifo and Tommy Tea (aka The Bloody Beetroots) are two men with a purpose, they’re intent on making our ears bleed, intent on making The Arches shake to the core,  intent on making everyone who has squeezed into the club jump and bounce all night. They carried out their intentions and more. By 3am everyone was drenched in sweat, i mean everyone, even the bar staff couldn’t help moving to the wonky techno and disorientating beats that were furiously leaping from the sound system all night. Even the weather couldn’t ruin the night. It was pissing down outside but nobody cared, there was no way our tshirts could get any wetter (is wetter a word? dunno) than they already were with sweat. Everyone who was there left with a smile on their face and wandered off into the rainy Glasgow morning drunkenly mumbling to each other about how good a night they had. I got home sometime between the hours of 5:30am and 6am , i can’t remember exactly when  but i know i stayed up discussing the night with my mate Gustav till 7am, then the dawn broke and i went to bed. When i woke up in the morning i had all the signs of a cold coming on (is it any wonder after wandering around Glasgow in a sweaty tshirt while the rain lashes down) but who cares? Not me, not after a night like The Bloody Beetroots. It was well worth it.

Found Fun, Lost Weekend

The Found Fun, Lost Weekend mitxtape was something i decided to put together early yesterday morning. All the songs were chosen on the spot, i had no certain tracks or anything that i was gonna work off of they way that i usually do. I just wanted to make a soundtrack that we could stick on back home after The Bloody Beetroots gig last night (one of the top 3 gigs i’ve been to, easily, but more about that soon). So i started off the mix with a bit of humour then straight into one of my own remixes and then from there onwards just some wonky, glitchy, digital dance music followed by some fast rapping infused songs and then onto a kinda chillout section at the end.
