THE MONDAY LIST #25: A Valentine For You

This blog has been up and running for just over 2 years now and i just realised that i’ve never actually done a proper Valentines Day post. So here is one in the form of a Monday List.

Valentines Day divides a lot of people. Some love it and celebrate it to the full with presents, dinner dates, “quiet” nights at hotels, cards, flowers and the general showering of love on their partner. Then there are those who hate (lets be honest it’s usually single people) Valentines Day and everything about it. Preferring to spend the day moaning about how it’s such a waste of time, money and effort.

Personally, i sit on the fence when it comes to the subject of Valentines Day. Yes, i think the fact that there is a day dedicated to love and showing it is a nice enough idea but i can also see the negative side of it. First there’s the whole commercialised side of it. That can get really tiresome. Hearts, flowers and all things red adorn just about every shop window and passing bus and every page of every paper/magazine. Then some would argue that there shouldn’t have to be a specific day to show your love. If you love someone tell them. Tell them everyday. Tell them at night. Tell them in the morning. Tell them when you hang up. Love and it’s pro’s and cons are a strange thing nowadays, it seems like people would rather tell the world (or more specifically Facebook) about their relationship rather than actually talk to their partner. But i suppose that’s life in the noughties. Maybe i’m just old fashioned.

Like i said though i’m neither here nor there when it comes to Valentines. There have been some Valentines Days i’ve enjoyed and some not so much. I just much prefer it to be a personal thing between two people rather than a day of brownie points and kudos for declaring your love on the 14th of February. But fret not, im not going to get all Ricki Lake and relationship advice-y on you so here’s the music.

A Valentines/Love List
————————–
1. Craig Armstrong – This Love
2. Beach House – Lover Of Mine
3. John Legend and The Roots – Love The Way It Should Be
4. Red Wire Black Wire – Post Apocalyptic Love Song
5. Nice Nice – A Little Love
6. Assassins 88 – True Love
7. Swimmer One – Lovesong
8. Pelle Carlberg – I Love You, You Imbecile
9. Cancel the Astronauts – Love Somebody
10. Arab Strap – Come Round And Love Me

I tried to keep them a bit different from the usual love song stuff and throw in a Scottish acts element. The main thing i aimed for was “uncheesy”, i hope i succeeded.

BONUS STUFF

Dirty Beaches – Valentine

Radiohead/Thom Yorke – True Love Waits

THE MONDAY LIST #24: Fuckity Fuck Fuck

Apparently, i swear too fucking much…

According to friends i use the word “fuck” way too much in every day life.

Examples i’ve been given…

A. “That’s fucking amazing!”
B. “What the fuck was that all about?”
C. “Did you fucking see that?!
D. “I’m fucked, man.”
E. “Fuckin hell!”
F(uck).
G. “Fuuuuuuuuuuuck!”

Obviously i use other swear words but apparently “fuck” and it’s various usages are my favourite. So here’s a fucking Monday List with a twist. Well make that two Monday Lists for the price of one. I had so much fucking fun making up a List with “fuck” in the song title that i thought i’d make another one up with swear words/insults in the bands name.

Fuck This List
——————–
MP3’s
1. McLusky – Fuck This Band
2. The Subs – Fuck That Shit
3. Bloody Beetroots – Fucked From Above 1985

5. Bring Me The Horizon – Fuck
6. The Music – You Might As Well Try To Fuck Me
7. Pulled Apart From Horses – Back To The Fuck Yeah
8. Dirty Disco Youth – Get the Fuck Out
9. The Tupolev Ghost – Giant Fucking Haysticks
10. Refused – Refused Are Fucking Dead

The Best Fucking List
—————————-
MP3’s
1. Holy Fuck – Balloons (Foals cover)
2. Fuck Buttons – Ribs Out
3. Kingbastard – I D K
4. Shitdisco – I Know Kung Fu
5. Selfish Cunt – Full Swing
6. Fukkk Offf – Rock Paper Scissors
7. Starfucker – German Love
8. Fucked Up – No Epiphany

10. Ol’ Dirty Bastard – Got Your Money (Featuring Kelis)

Bonus stuff……….

MP3: My Vitriol – Game Of Pricks

MP3: Fila Brazilia – Harmonicas Are Shite

MP3: Frank Turner – Heartless Bastard Motherfucker

I thinking swearing is maybe a Scottish trait and is in our blood. We don’t mean any harm or offence by it. It’s just crept it’s way into out day to day language. We just fucking embrace it i suppose.

Fuck Off Machete – What’s The Signal?

And lastly, my hero…

THE MONDAY LIST #23: The Revenge of The Phantom

The countdown to Halloween begins….

I’ve noticed in my “Stats” department recently that the key search word used on Google, by people who stumble across this blog unintentionally, during the last week or so has been “phantom”. I think it’s because the picture i used in this Halloween post last year is one of the first to pop up in the Google image search engine. Anyway it’s time to bring back the Phantom in the form of his very own Monday List.

“I Am Your Angel Of Music……”

THE REVENGE OF THE PHANTOM
___________________________

1. The Shins – Phantom Limb
2. Justice – Phantom
3. The Phantom Band – The Howling
4. Jookabox – Don’t Go Phantom
5. Jookabox – Phantom Don’t Go
6. Tori Amos – Happy Phantom (Live)
7. The Phantoms Revenge – I Heard You Were Dead
8. Phantom – Voodoo Romantic
9. Rob Zombie – Return Of The Phantom Stranger
10. Phantom Planet – California

And of course there’s the usual Bonus Tracks.

There’s the original version…

MP3: Andrew Lloyd Webber – Phantom of the Opera

Then there’s a sampled/remixed/dancier version….

MP3: Figure – The Phantom

And lastly there’s the misspelled one but an amazing band and song nonetheless…

MP3: Fantomas – Rosemary’s Baby

Although i’ve included them in The List i love this video so it’s worth putting it up too. They remind me a bit of Cocteau Twins.

THE MONDAY LIST #22: Ten Out Of 10

So yesterday was the 1oth October 2010. Those numbers 10/10/10 will only happen once in your lifetime…..unless you live to be over a hundred and see the year 2110. A scary thought.

My original plan was to do the usual and browse through my music library to find 10 songs that are some how related to the subject. The subject this time being the number ten. Yes i realise that’s a lot of tens right there. A list of ten songs with ten either in the artists name or song title. However after a quick ten minutes of perusing i could only find a few so i gave up as such.

Instead i’ve decided to do a countdown in reverse order through the numbers ten to one. Songs with numbers in the title. I suppose the countdown idea will have to do. If anyone else knows songs involving “10” then let me know!

I’ve added the other few songs (the 1o’s) i had intended to use in the list as extra bonus tracks.

Ten Out of 10
——————–

1. The Big Pink – Count Backwards From Ten
2. The Twilight Singers feat Mark Lanegan – Number Nine
3. Mew – Eight Flew Over, One Was Destroyed
4. The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army
5. DJ Shadow – Six Days
6. The Dirty Secrets – Five Feet of Snow
7. Nedry – Four Layers Of Pink
8. Air Formation – Three Years Pass
9. Klaxons – Two Receivers
10. Martina Topley-Bird – Need One (Fabien’s Mix)

BONUS TRACKS

MP3: Idlewild – Tell Me Ten Words

MP3: Ten Million Lights – Kill Yr Idols

MP3: The Black Keys – Ten Cent Pistol

ps. i was at the O.Children gig in Nice N Sleazys last night. It was one of the gigs of the year so far, very intimate. Very epic. I’ll do a review of it either tomorrow or wednesday (depending on how much time i have to myself tomorrow).

THE MONDAY LIST #21: Cassette Culture

Advances in technology and new ways of musical distribution, mainly the internet/file sharing, have led to a steady decline in the use of cassettes in recording (home or studio) and more so the act of selling your music on cassette.

So imagine my joy when Civil Civic made their EP “1” available in tape format earlier this year. I didn’t order mine till August and thus i missed out on getting one of the coloured versions but i did manage to get my hands on the EP ….just. Two days after i ordered mine, i got an email saying that they had just sold out! But thankfully i got one of the last numbers of these limited edition beauties. It’s hardly been off since. I love the sound of a cassette and Civil Civic’s music sounds just that little bit scuzzier when it’s blasting out of a tape deck.

This particular track is off the Run Overdrive/Fuck Youth split they released in July.

MP3: Civil Civic – Fuck Youth

Civil Civic may be helping to keep cassette culture alive but they’re not alone in their love of the of the amazing musical rectangles.

Cassette Culture
———————-
MP3’s

1. The Kills – Tape Song
2. Memory Tapes – Pink Stones
3. Fujiya and Miyagi – Cassettesingle
4. Cassettes Won’t Listen – Freeze And Explode
5. Tape Deck Mountain – On My Honor
6. Andrew Thomas – Blue Cassette
7. Tapes N Tapes – The Dirty Dirty
8. Brand New – Mix Tape
9. Tape Deck Bros – Science Fiction
10. Cassette Club – 4 Me (Bestrack Remix)

BONUS Track:

This Elliott Smith b-side was released on a compilation called “Air Check Cassette”.

MP3: Elliott Smith – See You Later

Dayve Hawk aka Memory Tapes seems to be a huge cassette fan. His current alias is a mash up of his two previous recording monikers “Memory Cassette” and “Weird Tapes”.

Glasgow’s West End has a pretty cool little pub called Radio. The walls are adorned with tapes, boomboxes and vinyl. It’s one of the coolest little hang out places in the area. It’s been my favourite haunt of the last month or so, even pushing The Captains Rest into second place. They have a mass collection of all sorts of music on cassette ranging from early punk singles right through to the Street Fighter soundtrack. They also make the best Southern Comfort with ginger beer in town. I also love the very cool little table football game they have but i won’t go into too much detail as i don’t want to embarrass Gustav……………….Ok, you twisted my arm, i’ll go into detail. I beat him 9-1, 8-2, 10-0 and 9-1 again all in the space of about 5 minutes. Although to be fair i am pretty fucking good at it 🙂

Remember the days when having a tape player in your car was cool?  Now it’s all sub-woofers and bluetooth connections. What next? Spotify direct to your car dashboard? (If you’re listening Spotify guys then i came up with that idea first! So if it happens, gimme a cut.)

Don’t get me wrong, i’m by no means a technophobe  but i do love my retro music stuff. I have a happy medium though because in all honesty i do love my iPod as well. I’d kinda be lost without it.

THE MONDAY LIST #20: Sympathy For The Devil

Yesterday i saw the trailer for the new M. Night Shyamalan movie “Devil”. Apparently it’s a return to form for the Indian born director. After the classics of “Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable” there was the decent enough “Signs” but then in my opinion his features since then have pretty much been in a steady decline. None more so than his latest effort “The Last Airbender” which has also been panned by media and critics alike.

But “Devil” definitely has the potential to be a resounding edge of the seat, “what happens next?”, “who is it?”, tension filled movie. It’s centred around 5 people who are in an elevator when it breaks down (my worst nightmare) and as the situation starts to turn more sinister they begin to suspect that one of them is in fact Lucifer himself. This of course leads to all sorts of eerie goings on and twists and turns.

The film is the first of the Night Chronicles Trilogy which focuses on the supernatural in modern society. It’s due for release on September 17th.

Seeing the trailer and taking inspiration from the idea behind it i’ve decided to dedicate the 20th Monday List to Mr Satan. To be fair i’d already assembled a List for Him Upstairs about a year ago so it’s only fair we go down to the basement and give the bad guy his 15 minutes of fame as well.

SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL
———————————–
MP3’s

1. Beck – Devils Haircut
2. TV On The Radio – Let The Devil In
3. Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster – Turkish Delights of the Devil (Live)
4. Telepathe – Devils Trident
5. Rolling Stones – Sympathy For The Devil
6. Cooper Temple Clause – The Devil Walks In The Sand
7.  The Gun Club – A Devil In The Woods
8. Max Romeo – I Chase The Devil
9. Zola Jesus – Devil Take You
10. BRMC – Beat The Devils Tattoo

Bonus tracks….

Although there is no actual reference to the devil in this song it’s widely believed that the song “Cross Road Blues” is about Robert Johnson meeting the Devil at a cross roads and selling him his soul in exchange for the ability to have pretty much unlimited skills on the guitar. So goes the legend anyway….

MP3: Robert Johnson – Cross Road Blues

Obviously, no one actually knows who, what or where the Devil is. Or in fact, even if he/she/it exists at all. I personally don’t believe in the whole good and evil side of things. Don’t get me wrong, i suppose i believe in something, a higher power/being or whatever but not enough to have faith in any one particular religion. I’m open to life just being life. But enough religi-ranting, the point i was originally going to put across was that most people who do believe in God and the Devil believe that they are both distinctly male. They are mainly perceived this way in modern society but who knows why.

But what if the Devil was a woman…..

MP3: Yannick Aellen – The Devil (Is A Woman I Never Slept With)

MP3: Primal Scream – Miss Lucifer

There is of course the one thing that everyone agrees on……that the devil is quite a scary proposition in any form.

Al Pacino was the coolest Devil ever. Fact.

THE MONDAY LIST #19: Digital Drugs

Tomorrow marks the release of the tenth anniversary edition of the classic Queens of the Stone Age album “Rated R”. One of my favourite albums of all time by one of my favourite bands of all time.  The album contains references to drugs throughout, no more so than in the opening track “Feel Good Hit of the Summer” where the only lyrics  are “Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol” before a chorus solely made up of the word “Cocaine” comes in. Messy, wonderfully loose and instantly ear catching. The rest of the album follows suit and makes for an absolute classic record.

MP3: Queens of the Stone Age – Feel Good Hit Of The Summer

All the drug references in Rated R gave me  an idea for the next Monday List….

Drugs may be the road to nowhere but at least they’re the scenic route….

DIGITAL DRUGS
________________

1. The Music – Drugs
2. Oceansize – Women Who Love Men Who Love Drugs
3. Union of Knives – We Are All Doing Drugs
4. The Verve – The Drugs Don’t Work
5. Jimmy Eat World – Drugs or Me
6. Adam Green – Drugs
7. Thieves Like Us – Drugs In My Body
8. Ratatat – Drugs
9. Wilco – Handshake Drugs
10. Black Lips – Drugs

There are of course many different types of drugs, too many to list in fact but here are a few bonus tracks.

BONUS TRACKS

MP3: Neon Indian – Should Have Taken Acid With You

MP3: The Magnetic Fields – Take Ecstasy With Me

MP3: Maps – Valium In The Sunshine

MP3: The Velvet Underground and Nico – Heroin

MP3: Phosphorescent – Cocaine Lights

Apparently there’s a new “drug” sweeping the universe at the moment. It’s called “i-dosing”. It’s the process of putting on headphones and listening to music that apparently induces a state of ecstasy. I know, sounds fucked up, right? These MP3’s are freely available and suggest that you “maybe lie down” and “relax” before closing your eyes and allowing the “music” to give you auditory and visual hallucinations.

Read more: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/07/digital-drugs/

Want a “hit”…

I’ve just got a hilarious picture in my head of a shady looking guy standing on a dark street corner, shiftily opening his trenchcoat to passers by and asking “Here mate, after any MP3’s?” or “I’ve got some really good stuff here. Albums, singles even some b-sides. Got some bootlegs too, this 70’s stuff will really fuck your mind”.

Who knows if this “i-dosing” works and frankly who cares? Seems like just another internet craze. I have no desire to try it and i’m certainly not in a hurry to overdose on music just yet so i won’t be dabbling with this nonsensical idea any time soon. I’ll stick to Boards of Canada, Spacemen 3, Gold Panda and Aphex Twin as my “drug music”.

*I would just like to state that this post/article is not in anyway intended to condone or promote drug use.*

MP3: Marilyn Manson – I Don’t Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me)

THE MONDAY LIST #18: A Very Royal Variety

This has been been on my iPod non-stop…

Yes, i’ve recently rediscovered my love for Royal Bangs. In the midst of rediscovering it i had a thought……”wouldn’t it be cool to make a list of royal related bands?”.

So i did..

2. Port-Royal – The Photoshopped Prince
3. Pantha Du Prince – Stick To My Side (Feat. Panda Bear)

MP3: The Subways – Rock And Roll Queen

Here’s some real royals………..

Ok, now this might offend some people although probably not as much as Prince Phillip does….

I remember reading about Yo Majesty a while ago, it’s not my kinda music really but they seem absolutely fucking nuts so that’s good enough for me.

I really couldn’t do a Royal list and even consider leaving this out….

THE MONDAY LIST #17: It Began In Africa

Unless you’ve been living on the moon for the past few weeks you’ll know that the World Cup is on. It is after all the single most watched sports event in on this planet of ours, with millions (billions if you believe FIFA) tuning in worldwide. You can’t escape it at the moment. Not that i’m complaining, i love it. But it’s everywhere. Every time you turn on the TV, every little advert that pops up online, every time you open the paper it’s there staring back at you. To be fair that is the case with most World Cups but this one even more so because it’s the first time it’s been held in Africa and it’s been celebrated just that little bit more. And so it should be.

Since the World Cup is now past the cat and mouse tactics of the group stages and is actually getting exciting it’s time to dedicate a post to it.  So to celebrate this momentous World Cup i’ve compiled a list of songs in honour of the great continent of Africa. I’m not gonna lie i could only come up with about 7 or 8 tracks i knew so i had to search for some more online and came across two Paul Simon and David Bowie tracks i could use. The first songs that came to mind for the list were the obvious ones by Toto, Errors, The Very Best, Leftfield and The Chemical Brothers then there were one or two i found by searching my external hard drive then i got stuck and reverted to Google. The song that actually made me think of doing the post was “Bloemfontein” by a band i’ve just got into called Junior Fencing Club (post more soon). I was listening to them on the way to work this morning and the idea came to me to do an African based post after seeing the song title. For those unaware,  The Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein is one of the venues used during the World Cup and is coincidentally the stadium at which Germany beat England 4-1 yesterday 🙂 Apologies to any English readers but with me being half Scottish half German you can imagine that i was very, very happy with that result.

Africa List
—————–

1. Leftfield and Afrika Bambaataa – Afrika Shox
2. Chemical Brothers – It Began In Afrika
3. Air – African Velvet
4. Toto – Africa
5. Errors – A Rumour In Africa
6. Trentemoller – African People
7. J Dilla – African Rhythms
8. The Very Best (feat Ezra Koenig) – Warm Heart of Africa
9. Paul Simon – Under African Skies
10. David Bowie – African Night Flight

BONUS TRACKS:

MP3: Junior Fencing Club – Bloemfontein

MP3: The Housemartins – Johannesburg

As another bonus i thought i’d put in a bit about this man….

Mr Lucas Radebe. He’s so much more than a footballer. He’s a national hero in South Africa where he holds almost god like status among the fanatical football fans. He’s also the influence behind (i shudder to say the name cos i HATE the frontman) the Kaiser Chiefs. Yes, this pain in the arse of a band are all Leeds United fans. Radebe played for Leeds United for almost a decade and was their favourite player so they decided to name their band after Radebe’s first club a South African team named Kaizer Chiefs. So, it was with the swift swapping of an “S” for a “Z” (probably to avoid legal wrangles) and the band formerly known as “Parva” (Parva? Kinda fucking name is that anyway?) became the Kaiser Chiefs and proceeded to irritate the ears of the world.

The Good Kaizer Chiefs

The Irritating, Evil Kaiser Chiefs

Ok, so maybe i’m being a bit harsh. It’s not the actual band i have this massive dislike for, it’s just the main dude. Singer Ricky Wilson looks and acts like an overweight, arrogant, smarmy, chipmunk on speed. I’m not and never will be a fan of the group, i don’t really like their music, it doesn’t do anything for me but seeing as i’ve verbally denounced them so much tonight i suppose it’s only fair they get a song up.

It could’ve been worse for them. They should be grateful that Lucas Radebe’s team before signing for Leeds wasn’t a club called Moroka_Swallows. Sounds more like an African XXX effort than a football team.

Just for the record, my money’s on Argentina for the World Cup. I stand to when a fair old amount of crispy notes if they win it.
