Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands

7 Years ago today the late, great Elliott Smith died. There is still some debate as to whether he committed suicide or not. But that’s another matter altogether. This post is to celebrate the life of Smith and the never ending legacy that he left behind.

I’m a huge fan of his songwriting skills and voice but i’m simply in awe of the raw emotion he could pluck and strum out of 6 simple guitar strings. There are only a handful of people in this universe of ours who can somehow make me feel the way i do when i listen to Elliott Smith tracks. His albums aren’t ones that i listen to when i’m company of friends. No, Elliott Smith is best experienced alone and dare i say it when you’re feeling down. If you know his back story and the struggles he went through then you’ll know what i mean. The words he sings, the way he sings them, the guitar he strums and the way he strums it can inspire anyone, no matter how down you are, to find that little extra bit of strength to pull through the darkest of times.

He was and still is an inspirational figure to myself and many my friends but it’s not just us who love him…….

His songs have been covered by a wide variety of artists and through a huge spectrum of genres. Here’s a select few.

MP3: Metric – Between The Bars (Elliott Smith Cover)

MP3: Cymbals Eat Guitars – Ballad Of Big Nothing (Elliott Smith cover)

MP3: My Vitriol – Bottle Up And Explode (Elliott Smith cover)

MP3: Jump Clubb – Angeles (Elliott Smith cover)

He wasn’t adverse to performing and recording a few covers as well….

MP3: Elliott Smith – Waterloo Sunset (The Kinks cover)

MP3: Elliott Smith – Supersonic (Oasis cover)

MP3: Elliott Smith – Thirteen (Big Star cover)

On the 1st of November, Domino Records release a best of Elliott Smith CD  simply entitled “An Introduction To……Elliott Smith”. The tracklisting is pretty flawless. Elliott Smith isn’t the easiest person to make a best of compilation for as he has so many songs that are worthy of making the cut but the album has been whittled down to 14 tracks from this supremely talented and gifted artist.

MP3: Elliott Smith – Miss Misery

MP3: Elliott Smith – Twilight

One of my favourite tracks that didn’t make the best of compilation is “Amity” from the XO album.

MP3: Elliott Smith – Amity

Live he was a phenomenal force. Quiet yet loud. Happy yet sad.  Weak yet somehow strong. All the while very shy and  very endearing.

You can download a live Elliott Smith set from Stockholm in 1998 here.

Here’s the setlist:

1. Angeles
2. Division Day
3. Clementine
4. Alameda
5. Between the Bars
6. Pictures of Me
7. Waltz #2
8. Rose Parade
9. Some Song
10. Say Yes
11. Needle in the Hay
12. Roman Candle
13. Independence Day
14. Speed Trials
15. 2:45 AM
16. No Name #1
17. Thirteen

I’ve never seen him live in the flesh but i’ve seen a lot of YouTube videos and this one in particular gives me chills every time. You feel like he’s in the room alongside you playing for only you.

All that’s left to say is..

…and Goodbye.

THE MONDAY LIST #21: Cassette Culture

Advances in technology and new ways of musical distribution, mainly the internet/file sharing, have led to a steady decline in the use of cassettes in recording (home or studio) and more so the act of selling your music on cassette.

So imagine my joy when Civil Civic made their EP “1” available in tape format earlier this year. I didn’t order mine till August and thus i missed out on getting one of the coloured versions but i did manage to get my hands on the EP ….just. Two days after i ordered mine, i got an email saying that they had just sold out! But thankfully i got one of the last numbers of these limited edition beauties. It’s hardly been off since. I love the sound of a cassette and Civil Civic’s music sounds just that little bit scuzzier when it’s blasting out of a tape deck.

This particular track is off the Run Overdrive/Fuck Youth split they released in July.

MP3: Civil Civic – Fuck Youth

Civil Civic may be helping to keep cassette culture alive but they’re not alone in their love of the of the amazing musical rectangles.

6. Andrew Thomas – Blue Cassette
7. Tapes N Tapes – The Dirty Dirty

10. Cassette Club – 4 Me (Bestrack Remix)

BONUS Track:

This Elliott Smith b-side was released on a compilation called “Air Check Cassette”.

MP3: Elliott Smith – See You Later

Dayve Hawk aka Memory Tapes seems to be a huge cassette fan. His current alias is a mash up of his two previous recording monikers “Memory Cassette” and “Weird Tapes”.

Glasgow’s West End has a pretty cool little pub called Radio. The walls are adorned with tapes, boomboxes and vinyl. It’s one of the coolest little hang out places in the area. It’s been my favourite haunt of the last month or so, even pushing The Captains Rest into second place. They have a mass collection of all sorts of music on cassette ranging from early punk singles right through to the Street Fighter soundtrack. They also make the best Southern Comfort with ginger beer in town. I also love the very cool little table football game they have but i won’t go into too much detail as i don’t want to embarrass Gustav……………….Ok, you twisted my arm, i’ll go into detail. I beat him 9-1, 8-2, 10-0 and 9-1 again all in the space of about 5 minutes. Although to be fair i am pretty fucking good at it 🙂

Remember the days when having a tape player in your car was cool?  Now it’s all sub-woofers and bluetooth connections. What next? Spotify direct to your car dashboard? (If you’re listening Spotify guys then i came up with that idea first! So if it happens, gimme a cut.)

Don’t get me wrong, i’m by no means a technophobe  but i do love my retro music stuff. I have a happy medium though because in all honesty i do love my iPod as well. I’d kinda be lost without it.

Imagine None Of This Is Real…..

First off apologies for the lack of any posts in the last week or so. I haven’t been anywhere near the computer since last Friday night. The lack of free time has been due to various reasons/happenings. Sleep deprivation being the main one. My insomnia seems to just come and go without warning. Some nights i could feel sleepy at half 10 and just conk out and sleep right through till the morning. Other nights i can’t sleep at all and worst of all some nights i get broken sleep. I hate that the most, there’s nothing worse than falling asleep at 3am and then waking up every 30 minutes or so and then going to work at 8am. I’ll need to look into something that can help me with this, if anybody has any ideas let me know. Right now i’ve just been using a little Spotify playlist that i made up, it’s been kinda working i suppose but more on that another day (i’ll post some tracks off it soon). Let’s talk about the weekend just past.

Before i start on the good stuff though, i caught heed of some bad news on Sunday night. I’d like to express my disbelief at the tragic events that took place at Pukkelpop festival in Belgium over the weekend where Charlie Haddon, lead singer of the London synth band Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, sadly took his own life. The full story and exact details don’t seem to have emerged yet but it seems that a crowd surf attempt from a member of the band went badly wrong, some say Haddon made the attempt whilst others have stated that Joe Hutchinson actually jumped into the crowd. Either way, the outcome is one of absolute shock. A girl was seriously injured in the botched stage dive and the members of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool were besides themselves with worry and grief. It’s believed they thought the girls injuries were so serious that she may be paralysed. Obviously there is no way any damage was intended by the band, it was just a dreadful accident. But the 3 band members apparently argued furiously backstage after their set and in the hours afterwards Haddon decided to take his own life. The really tragic thing is that the girl injured in the stage dive is expected to make a full recovery.

It’s such a loss of amazing talent for a band who were definitely on their way to something big. Their debut album was due out in October which they were then set to follow with their first UK headline tour.

My heart goes out to Charlie Haddons family and the band members. My thoughts and condolences are with you all.

The lyrics in this particular track are astonishingly eerie/haunting considering all things.

MP3: Ou Est Le Swimming Pool – Outside

The tracks that they are probably best known for are “Dance The Way I Feel” (featured in my Best of 2009 section if you wanna hear it, if you haven’t already) and “Jacksons Last Stand”.

R.I.P Charlie Haddon

Moving away from the sombre mood, i was out for Luisa’s birthday on Saturday night, it was a good night, a really good night. So good in fact that i spent the next day wallowing in my own self pity. Suffering from the hangover of all hangovers. Though to be fair i did manage to somehow make it through back home to visit my parents and sister. Although i imagine i wouldn’t have been much fun as i just moped around moaning about having a sore head and hairy teeth (dry mouth from too much alcohol for those unaware of that term) whilst constantly complaining about the adverts on TV being too loud. Yes, i’m a grumpy Sunday boy, especially if i’ve been out the night before.

Luisa’s 20th was marked in traditional Glasgow style…..drink as many shots as humanly possible and dance yer bum off. Which everyone did…..well, from what i can remember anyway.

Here’s the birthday girl being taken hostage by my right arm….

I absolutely love that expression! And the Cure t-shirt. Which reminds me. I want THIS

And here’s Luisa with her boyfriend/one of my best friends, Gordon/The G Man/Bubbles.

Take note of Gordons totally non ironic Tina Turner t-shirt. I really can’t give him too much verbal over it…..we both bought tshirts for 3 euros each in a bargain bin at ROCK AM in Germany a few years back, Tina was his pick…..what did i get?….a Michael Jackson (Dangerous Tour) one. My head is bowed right now. In shame. Fashion shame.

Here’s a few more links..

Luisa’s blog littlenihilist

Gordon’s band Damnable Contraption….let’s call it experimental art shall we? Songs about smelly genitalia. You have been warned!

As a little birthday extra (even though it is like 4 days late!) here’s a few of Luisa’s fave artists/tracks.

MP3: Death Cab For Cutie – Photobooth

MP3: Bright Eyes – Lua

MP3: Elliott Smith – Angeles

MP3: Jimmy Eat World – Sweetness

MP3: Bloody Beetroots – Domino

By the way Luisa, if you’re reading this, that last track is yet another hint at something we’ve spoke about since May………geez back my Bloody Beetroots t-shirt!

Also, not sure if you’re aware of this or not but you have the “privilege ” of this being Number 1 in the charts when you were born…..

Happy Birthday (again) Luisa xx 🙂

Lastly, i had to turn down a ticket for the Eels gig at the Glasgow Academy last night.

1. I’m running low on funds till payday, which is next Tuesday.
2. I was absolutely shattered (see top of post for insomnia explanation)
3. I was working till 7pm so it would’ve probably been a mad rush to get home and make it back in time for the gig.

Ah excuses, excuses!!

Don’t look so sad, i didn’t mean it, can you ever forgive me Mr Everett?!

THE MONDAY LIST #13: Unlucky For Some….

Seeing as this is the thirteenth Monday List i thought i’d just roll with the numbers and do a list of unlucky related songs. Ok, here goes….

Unlucky For Some….
——————————-

1. Black Cat #13 – Ingest with Water
2. Mystery Jets – Umbrellahead
3. Patrick Wolf – Magpie
4. Pixies – No.13 Baby
5. The Cribs – Mirror Kissers
6. Fu Manchu – Evil Eye
7. Hot Chip – Bad Luck
8. Caspian – The Raven
9. Elliott Smith – Thirteen
10. Korn – Shoots and Ladders
11. Queens Of The Stone Age – Walkin’ On The Sidewalks
12. Tasharg – The Seven Year Itch
13. Wu Tang Clan – Dog Shit

The only things i could think of which were bad luck related were black cats, the number 13, walking under ladders, opening an umbrella indoors, walking on the cracks in the pavement, breaking a mirror, magpies, ravens and i wasn’t sure if standing in dog faeces is unlucky or lucky. I think it varies from culture to culture. Personally i think it’s a bit of both….it’s obviously quite unlucky to stand in it but then again surely your day can only get better if you tread in shit so it could be kinda lucky i suppose. Dunno really.

Duck For Cover #1

Another new section, just a simple post about cover versions of songs i like, dislike or maybe even just find funny. I’m gonna do 5 songs each post (well it’ll actually work out at 10 cos both versions will be included). Usually i would post MP3 versions of the songs so that you would be able to download them but i’m having a few problems with my external hard drive at the moment and it has practically all of my music on it. Over 200GB of music just vansihed 😦

Anyways, videos will have to do for the time being…and even at that, it won’t be the official videos. YouTube doesn’t allow you to embed “official” videos.

1. SET YOU FREE

Original Version – N-Trance
Cover Version – Frightened Rabbit

2. EVERYWHERE

Original Version – Fleetwood Mac
Cover Version – Vampire Weekend

3. BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Original Version – Death From Above 1979
Cover Version – Neverending White Lights

*the version that Neverending White Lights do is actually a cover version of a remix version of “Black History Month” believe it or not but we’ll let it swing just this once. If you’re interested the remix they’re covering is by Allan Braxe and Fred Falke.

4. HEARTBEATS

Original Version – The Knife
Cover Version – Jose Gonzalez

5. BETWEEN THE BARS

Original Version – Elliott Smith
Cover Version – Metric
