Homebound

I’ve returned home to Glasgow after my weekend in Dundee.

I’m way too tired to justify anything other than a half arsed post so here’s some songs from my iPod that sum up the weekend….

1. The bus journey up
MP3: Fake Blood – Fix Your Accent

2. The Friday night in Keanes flat
MP3: Coolrunnings – When I Got High With You

3. The Saturday afternoon
MP3: Carmen Rosa – Football Pie

4. The Saturday night out in Dundee
MP3: Ryan Adams – Drunk And Fucked Up (Like The Twilight)

5. Waking up on “that” chair this morning
MP3: Idlewild – Let Me Sleep (Next To The Mirror)

6. The bus journey home
MP3: For A Minor Reflection – Kyrr+¦

For A Minor Reflection are the best soundtrack for a late Sunday night bus journey. Fact.

Anyway that about puts the weekend into perspective.

THE MONDAY LIST #22: Ten Out Of 10

So yesterday was the 1oth October 2010. Those numbers 10/10/10 will only happen once in your lifetime…..unless you live to be over a hundred and see the year 2110. A scary thought.

My original plan was to do the usual and browse through my music library to find 10 songs that are some how related to the subject. The subject this time being the number ten. Yes i realise that’s a lot of tens right there. A list of ten songs with ten either in the artists name or song title. However after a quick ten minutes of perusing i could only find a few so i gave up as such.

Instead i’ve decided to do a countdown in reverse order through the numbers ten to one. Songs with numbers in the title. I suppose the countdown idea will have to do. If anyone else knows songs involving “10” then let me know!

I’ve added the other few songs (the 1o’s) i had intended to use in the list as extra bonus tracks.

Ten Out of 10
——————–

1. The Big Pink – Count Backwards From Ten
2. The Twilight Singers feat Mark Lanegan – Number Nine
3. Mew – Eight Flew Over, One Was Destroyed

5. DJ Shadow – Six Days
6. The Dirty Secrets – Five Feet of Snow
7. Nedry – Four Layers Of Pink
8. Air Formation – Three Years Pass
9. Klaxons – Two Receivers
10. Martina Topley-Bird – Need One (Fabien’s Mix)

BONUS TRACKS

MP3: Idlewild – Tell Me Ten Words

MP3: Ten Million Lights – Kill Yr Idols

MP3: The Black Keys – Ten Cent Pistol

ps. i was at the O.Children gig in Nice N Sleazys last night. It was one of the gigs of the year so far, very intimate. Very epic. I’ll do a review of it either tomorrow or wednesday (depending on how much time i have to myself tomorrow).

Ae Fond Kiss

Tonight is Rabbie Burns night here in Scotland. He was born on this day in 1759. There is of course the usual celebrations that take place on his birthday, these celebrations usually consist of haggis, neeps and tatties but i’m going for something more musical tonight. Burns is perhaps most famous for Auld Lang Syne but he also wrote a lot of other wondrous pieces. Among them is my favourite, “Ae Fond Kiss”. It’s an aching ode to a love that’s been lost. I remember studying the work of Burns at school and this was the one that really stood out to me.

The story goes as follows: in 1791 Burn’s one true love Agnes M’Lehose (or “Nancy” to her friends and in the song) decided to end the affair between herself and Robert Burns and make an attempt to save her marriage. She travelled to Jamaica in pursuit of her husband and “Ae Fond Kiss” is the love letter/song/poem that Burns wrote to her when she was on her travels.

So instead of the usual run of the mill celebrations i thought it”d be a nice idea to remember Robert Burns by looking at some more alternative Scottish love songs. None of this Proclaimers nonsense though or stereotypical “Och Aye The Noo” type novelty singers that we seem to have way to much of these days.  No, i’m talking about proper Scottish bands and proper songs of despair and lost love.

But first and as cheesy as it may seem….i need to show this, it’s Eddie Reader singing “Ae Fond Kiss”. (lyrics are below in two forms)

I know some people, well most people in fact, struggle to understand the Scottish dialect and accent and although the song isn’t perfomed here in a broad accent i thought it’d be a good idea to post the lyrics in a more straight forward sense as well as the old script above. I should also point out that Eddi Reader sings the songs in slightly different order from the original lyrics.

A fond kiss and then we sever
A farewell and then for ever.
Deep in heart-wrung tears I’ll pledge thee
Warring sighs and groans I’ll wage thee

Who shall say that fortune grieves him,
While the star of hope she leaves him?
Me, No cheerful twinkle lights me,
Dark despair around benights me.

I’ll never blame my partial fancy,
Nothing could resist my Nancy.
For to see her was to love her,
Love but her, and love for ever.

Had we never loved so kindly,
Had we never loved so blindly,
Had we never met or never parted,
We’d have never been so broken hearted.

Farewell my first and fairest
Farewell my best and dearest
Thine be like joy and treasure,
Peace, enjoyment, love and pleasure

A fond kiss and then we sever
A farewell, alas, for ever
Deep in heart-wrung tears I’ll pledge thee
Warring sighs and groans I’ll wage thee.

A few more old Scottish songs (one from the 80’s and one from the 90’s) about heartbreak…

Arab Strap – Here We Go

Big Country – Come Back To Me

Enough of the oldies though, what does this generation of Scottish music bring us in terms of love that hurts?…….

THE MONDAY LIST #9: I Change Shapes Just To Hide In This Place…

Tonights list is dedicated to songs that come in all shapes and sizes, literally. The criteria for the list required having a shape (or reference to shapes) in the song title or the artists name. Some songs are quite long, the New Order track clocks in at just under 7 minutes and there are a few short ones, namely the track by The Octagon and the song “Tommib” by Squarepusher which is barely over a minute long. The avid film fans among you may recognise that particular Squarepusher track from the film Lost In Translation. The particular scene that it’s from is a perfect example of music and cinema coming together to create a beautiful moment.

THE MONDAY LIST #6: Is Sleep For The Weak or The Week?

After a rather long and draining but equally enjoyable weekend i find myself feeling very tired but unable to fall asleep. I  ended up nodding off for about ten minutes earlier on tonight and felt like shit after it, now i can’t get to sleep at all. The weekend involved a slightly insane jaunt through to Stirling, a night out in the ghost town known as Paisley and a Sunday that seemed to last forever. I’ve only had around about 16 hours sleep since 6am on Friday, the tiredness had been there since last midweek anyway but now its finally caught up with me. In fact it’s more than caught up with me, it’s overtaken me and leaving me behind, it’s heading off into the distance faster than Usain Bolt on steroids. Even my usual method of listening to some Boards of Canada or The Album Leaf in the dark isn’t working. Anyways, in a rather ironic twist (and while i’m still awake) i’ve decided to make a list of SleepyTime themed songs that i have….

zzzz
MP3’s
Is Sleep For The Weak Or The Week?
——————————————

1. The Postal Service – Sleeping In
2. Explosions In The Sky – With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept
3. Deftones – If Only Tonight We Could Sleep (cover of The Cure)
4. My Bloody Valentine – When You Sleep
5. Grand Archives – Sleepdriving
6. St Famous – Tired And Emotional
7. Idlewild – Let Me Sleep (Next To The Mirror)
8. Passion Pit – Sleepyhead
9. REM – The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite
10. Thee Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra – The Triumph Of Our Tired Eyes

and just as a wee bonus track (and because it takes me back to my childhood, well the Lion King in specific)

MP3: The Tokens – The Lion Sleeps Tonight

Boombox Pillow
Maybe one of the reasons i can’t get to sleep? MP3:  Blur – Coffee And TV

VIDEOS:

Faithless – Insomnia (Live @ Glastonbury 2002)

Simian Mobile Disco – Sleep Deprivation

iPillow?

iPillow?

….and just before i head off and attempt to knock myself out i’ll finish with this lovely bit of music from one of my favourite bed time artists…

MP3: The Album Leaf – Seal Beach

remember that all mp3’s are freely available to download from this page but always try and support your favourite artists.

Ok i’m off, i’m hoping that if i work my way through The Album Leaf discography whilst curled up in the dark counting sheep i’ll end up in the land of Z’s….wish me luck.

Good night
