Meet Me In The Graveyard At Midnight

So this is the first part of the Halloween mixtapes i promised. This is just a short “creepy” one. It clocks in at about 40 odd minutes. While walking home late at night earlier this week  i came up with the concept of making an atmospheric and “intimidating” mixtape that could be used at the beginning of a party, maybe just as the guests are arriving or whatever. My original idea was to make it a bit longer but i was pressed for time so just quickly recorded this one.

The songs i used are ones that i think hell (if there is one) would sound like.

I fell in love with the Drop The Lime remix of “Ruins” as soon as i heard it. The Burial Hex ones speak for themselves. The Wolf Eyes track is borderline terrifying. Aphex Twin as usual is slightly deranged and as for the A Place To Bury Strangers track…well, to me “Falling Sun” has always sounded like the noise that would be playing when the world ends.

Meet Me In The Graveyard At Midnight
————————————————-

1. O.Children – Ruins (Drop The Lime remix)
2. Burial Hex – Go Crystal Tears
3. Wolf Eyes – Village Oblivia
4. A Place To Bury Strangers – Falling Sun
5. Aphex Twin – Gwely Mernans
6. Burial Hex – Will To The Chapel

just right click and save as
MP3: Someone’s In The Wolf – Meet Me In The Graveyard At Midnight

Here’s a few little bonus tracks thrown in with a skeleton theme just for good measure.

MP3: Adebisi Shank – Bones

MP3: The Cramps – Rockin’ Bones

MP3: This Song Is A Mess But So Am I – Bones Bones Bones

MP3: The Beets – My Bones, My Flesh and Me

MP3: Friendly Fires – Skeleton Boy

MP3: Radiohead – Bones

I’ll get another mixtape up before the weekend is out. I’ve also made a massive 5 hour one for my friends party so i’ll try post some tracks off of that as well and i’ll get some more Halloween themed stuff up too before Hallow’s Eve eventually arrives…

What Might Have Been Lost….

A few months back  i randomly discovered a mash up of Bon Iver and Ellie Goulding. It’s different from most mash ups in that it’s not two different songs put together…..well kinda. It’s the original version of “Wolves Act I and II” by Bon Iver spliced together with the cover of the same song that Ellie Goulding did last year. I’ve let a few friends hear it and it seems to be quite popular so it’s about time i posted it.

I was a bit sceptical at first. I listened to both versions separately and then tried to imagine them together. To be honest i never thought it would come out anywhere near as perfect as it does when they’re matched up. I’m not Ellie Goulding’s biggest fan (i do like “Guns and Horses” though) but her vocals on the mash up version somehow bring an even more haunting dimension to the track. I mean i absolutely adore the original Bon Iver version and i prefer that to any cover or mash up but something about this particular combination of vocals is beautifully painful. Maybe they should get together and make a few albums a la Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan.

MP3: Bon Iver and Ellie Goulding – Wolves (Act I & II)

On the subject of Bon Iver, i think it’s about time i posted some of the remixes i have….

Most of his songs aren’t exactly ripe for remixing (i’ve tried and failed miserably) but there are a few folk out there who have made exceptional tracks.

MP3: Bon Iver – Re Stacks (Tomas Barfod Remix)

MP3: Bon Iver – Blood Bank (Skinny Freidmann Remix)

MP3: Bon Iver vs Aphex Twin – Woods Licker (Unknown Remix)

MP3: Bon Iver/El-P – Woods Blend (Phaseone Version)

And of course any excuse to get some Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell in…..

MP3: Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan – You Won’t Let Me Down Again

One more thing, i read earlier tonight that Kanye West has asked Justin Vernon to contribute to his new album which is due to drop sometime this winter. Another interesting combination to say the least. I know that Vernon has dabbled with hip hop and dare i say R’n’B before, on GAYNGS creepy yet sexy debut album “Relayted”, even taking to a spot of rapping on the albums final track “Last Prom On Earth” but Kanye is a whole different prospect. I hope it works out.

After Every Party I Die…..This Time I’m Alive

At every party there are two kinds of people – those who want to go home and those who don’t.  The trouble is, they are usually married to each other. – Ann Landers

Maybe The Shittest T-Shirt Ever?

Nope, i didn’t go to the party last night. I decided in my better judgement that i’d rather stay in and continue single handedly ensuring my flat turned into what was pretty much my own little smoke haze filled cave.

MP3: IAMX – After Every Party I Die

I stayed up to the wee small hours (3am to be precise) enjoying as much Aphex Twin as my mind could handle before retreating to my bedroom to enjoy the many advantages of YouTube and 4OD.

Upon awakening this morning i immediately realised that not going was 100% the right decision…

A) it’s another beautiful day. If i was hungover i would just stay in bed all day. Such a waste.

B) my flatmate, who went to the party, got in at 7am this morning. I couldn’t have handled that in my psychoactive state. Although to be fair to him he did then arise at 11am. He’s also working at 4pm this afternoon. Hardcore.

C) i get to go jam in the studio, lie in the park and then watch tonights World Cup game between Brazil and Ivory Coast.

So my plans for today are simple. Finish this post. Finish the pre-prepared joint and the black coffee. Head to the studio with FX pedal in tow. Laze in the park for a bit afterwards then home for the game which will be enjoyed with a few spiced rums on ice.

Here’s a few songs from the mini playlist i’ve just finished listening to this morning….

MP3: 1, 2, 3 – Confetti

MP3: BitCrush – Demons and Dandelions

MP3: Min-Y-Llan – Sunset Over Mathry

MP3: Silver Columns – It Is Still You

MP3: Teeth – See Spaces (Visions of Trees Remix)

Also been listening to these guys a lot again recently….

This is another summer gem in waiting.

The somewhat cult but soon to be not-so-cult Glasgow band Mitchell Museum. They’re a must live. They played earlier this month @ Sleazys. They were on my radar about a year ago but they kinda slipped off it. Welcome back.

MP3: Mitchell Museum – Extra Lives

One more thing….apologies for what seems like my constant referencing to weed and getting high recently. It’s just that i’ve not found the time to be able to just relax and chill by myself over the last week or two and i’m taking full advantage of it. Plus this stuff is some of the best i’ve smoked 🙂

If you want an album that is perfect for sitting on your own with some weed, look no further.

Too Much Time To Waste (Part 1)

Apologies for the complete lack of attention i’ve being giving to the blog recently. I’ve had a fairly busy and eventful couple of weeks since i last posted. I’ve been to 4 gigs and also took a road trip to Aberdeen for a few days. I’ve put in a lot of overtime at work. I’ve helped my sister move house. I’ve gained a nice PA System. Oh and i’ve slept a lot. Exciting stuff or what?

Ok let’s see….my last post was on the 22nd February so lets begin the update from the 23rd.

23rd February

God Is An Astronaut @ Oran Mor

This gig was definitely one of the haziest i’ve ever been to. And i don’t just mean because of the smoke machines and lighting. Me and Simon somehow managed to work our way through an astronomical amount of our bag of weed. We didn’t touch one drop of alcohol all night. It was just weed, water, weed, water, weed. You get the picture. Some would maybe think that getting that stoned before and during a gig would maybe hinder or lessen the experience. Which is more than likely true in quite a few cases. But not God Is An Astronaut. It brings a whole new dimension to their music. I felt like i could almost see the music. Weird, yes? But i tend to find that with a lot of post-rock and instrumental bands.  That type of music is one that heightens my aural and visual senses. It gives me visions, makes me see things, mainly colours but other things too. Just random stuff that i couldn’t describe. Not because i don’t want to but i simply don’t know how to. The band also had a screen behind them so that would have added to the visual side of things. Butterfly Explosion provided the support for God Is An Astronaut and they were the perfect build up. Two bands i’ve wanted to see live for years and here they both were together. Couldn’t ask for much more really.

MP3: God Is An Astronaut – Suicide By Star

MP3: Butterfly Explosion – Sophia

Also, as a bonus (because i feel guilty about the lack of posting) here are some tracks by a few other bands i’ve really enjoyed seeing whilst under the influence of Dr Greenthumb.

MP3: Aphex Twin – Windowlicker

MP3: Mew – Comforting Sounds

MP3: Team Sleep – Ataraxia

MP3: Unkle – Lonely Soul

25th February

Errors @ The Grand Ole Opry

This was all set to be a strange night and if truth be told, one that i was a bit nervous/sceptical about. The Grand Ole Opry you see is a Western Themed venue. See for yourself….http://www.glasgowsgrandoleopry.co.uk/

It’s more famous for it’s live country music that takes centre stage every weekend. There are also “shootouts” (not real one’s of course…i hope) and Cowboy and Indian theme nights. And there’s no bar…..oh no, there’s a saloon instead. Nice. So as you can imagine i found it very strange yet somehow appealing that an electronic instrumental band such as Errors would choose such a venue. Could it work?

Yes it could and it did. It was a brilliant gig. One that will stay in the memory for a long time. The crowd were full of nice cheery faces, a mixture of the bearded muso types and trendy indie types and their girlfriends. The only gripe i would have was the amount of time it took to get served a drink. The venue has probably never been so busy before and you could almost see the panic written across the faces of the staff.  You could see that the barmaids, sorry, Saloon staff (Saloonettes?) were every but as bemused by us as we were by them. The staff is made up of mainly people that are about 50+ so it was surprising to see them cheerily bop along to the Errors chimes and beats. The new song “Rumour In Africa” seemed a favourite. It was the fourth time i’d seen Errors and they seem to be progressing at an almost perfect rate. Each album or EP becoming more expansive and complex than the previous. As the band themselves said in a recent interview it’s hard to keep making instrumental music that remains interesting and not dull. I know from experience that that is very true but they just happen make it look so easy and effortless. After the gig me and Gustav got a free taxi back to the city centre. We spotted a taxi driver stuck in a rut, well a big puddle to be more precise and decided to help him out in his hour of need. He repayed us with a fare-less journey. Nice man. We then proceeded to enter a club in Glasgow, those few hours however are a blur of strange coloured shots and plastic pint glasses.

MP3: Errors – Bridge Or Cloud?

26th February

Japandroids @ King Tuts

Another great gig at the most reliable venue in Scotland. I don’t think i’ve ever left King Tuts disappointed. Ok, maybe once when my ex girlfriend happened to spill her blackcurrant and cider all over my freshly bought brand new Oceansize t-shirt but that’s all in the past. I’m over the t-shirt heartache.

The Japandroids seem to be getting a taste for this whole live headlining show malarky. They oozed charisma and charm on stage and had the crowd eating out the palms of their hands. They have anthems in waiting coming out of those amps and they’re finally just starting to truly embrace it. There was a lot of foot stomping from band and crowd alike. A lot of sweat (for once, not from me, i stayed up back this time). A lot of beer. And a lot of banter and sing-a-longs. The songs were making the crowd happy and in return the crowd’s reactions were making the Japandroids happy. Afterwards i took the option of a train home and a reasonably early night (1am) as i was up early the next morning.

MP3: Japandroids – The Boys Are Leaving Town

27th February

Lisa moves house…..i’m hungover.

The sole reason i decided to head home after the Japandroids gig and not join my friends at a club was because i had to get up early to help my sister and her family move house. In hindsight i should probably just have stayed in the night before. I had no idea how much stuff they had in that little flat of theirs! I was anticipating beds, some furniture, a dozen or so bags of random stuff, tvs etc. The usual really. What we (me, Symey, Graham and my dad) were faced with was box upon box of things. Really heavy things. I have a lot of DVDs and CDs but my collection pales into comparison with Garys (my brother in law). He’s been collecting vinyl, cassettes, CDs, VHS, DVDs, boxsets, and all other sorts of memorabilia since his pre-teen days. He’s now coming up for 28. So work that out. That’s right, about 22 years worth of stuff squeezed into about fifty million boxes. And that was just for starters. That was before we started on the really heavy stuff. And that’s just what it was just stuff. I asked Lisa what was in these heavy boxes and bags. Her reply? “Just stuff“. “What kind of stuff?” i asked. “I have the right to know what i’m lugging up and down stairs all day!” Once more the reply came, “I told you John, it’s just stuff, so just get lifting!” That was me told. So after all the “stuff” was out the way it was the turn of the sofa and wardrobes. Followed closely by the beds and baby cot. We started the moving at 10am and were finished by 4pm. That’s a fine shift if you ask me. Especially when you consider the amount of stuff to be moved and also the “sensitive” mood i was in. A hard days work followed by a night in bed and The IT Crowd Boxset. Why do i find Jen from the IT Crowd so attractive? There’s just something about her. It might be the whole ordinary girl from next door look and her sense of humour.

MP3: Moving Units – Between Us And Them

MP3: Ryan Adams – This House Is Not For Sale

MP3: MiKiX The Cat – Movin’ Around

“If you type google into google you will…break the internet”

Tomorrow or Thursday i’ll post the rest of the update which will predominantly be about the trip to Aberdeen.

Before i go though….i want to know exactly what it is that i’ve said/someone else has said/what i’ve seen in these pictures….

Any ideas?

The Last Month Of Fuzz

Sometime last December, i randomly came across an article in the local paper. It contained these facts about facial hair.

An average man has 25,000 whiskers on his face, and facial hair grows at a rate of approximately five to six inches a year. Whiskers? What am i? A fucking cat?

An average man will spend in excess of 3000 hours of his life in the act of shaving. This one really got to me, so by going a month without shaving it meant i gained back a good few of those hours!

Now, i had only shaved off my novelty moustache (the one i grew in aid of Movember) a few days before reading that particular article but decided there and then that i would make an attempt at growing a beard sometime in the upcoming New Year. “Beards are meant to make you look thoughtful,  philosphocal, even cool apparently ” i thought. “I’ve got nothing to lose”.

But i didn’t want to have a big fuzzy face for the Christmas season, i mean if i was to turn up at Christmas parties and nights out dressed in my ripped jeans with my face covered in unkempt multi-coloured facial hair i’d probably end up giving off the impression that i was lost and looking for spare change. So i waited a while before finally having my last shave on the 29th of December. I tried to time it perfectly so that i could enjoy New Years Eve and the following weeks New Year celebrations (my family celebrate New Year right up until the 5th of January, we have a lot of relatives to get round) with just a few days stubble and then a weeks stubble at most, that way i would look just normally ugly in the family pictures instead of really hairy and ugly.

This was my beard at 2 weeks old, it got worse believe me.

So the weeks passed by and i grew to like my beard and genuinely thought about keeping it for longer than the sole month that i intended. But last night the 4 weeks were up and it came off.

The beard divided opinion amongst my friends and family. My mum hated it, i looked neanderthal apparently. She is the most relieved that it’s now gone. My sister Lisa liked it. To her it made me look intellectual. Something i’m pretty sure i’m not. She also said that it made me look like i was “..a member of Mogwai or something…”. It probably had something to do with the shirt i was wearing at the time, it was a checked/plaid effort. Either way the Mogwai comment made me smile. My dad also quite liked the beard. He told me it made me look like a younger version of him. That was one of the swaying factors when it came to shaving it off if i’m honest! Most of my other relatives didn’t recognise me at first when they came over recently, seriously, that’s fucked up. How can someone not recognise their nephew/cousin under a simple beard. In general my close friends liked the beard, there was the odd cry of “lumberjack!” or “oh, look out, here comes Grizzly Adams!” but nothing negative really.

Well, anyway, it’s gone now, shaven completely off last night.

So here’s to you, multi-coloured Beard.  Born on the 29th of December 2009 and sadly fell down the sink on the 26th of January 2010. I’ll never forget you.

And here’s to a few beardy artists.

Take note of the “Do 50% of band members have a beard” part. So do beards make you cool? …….Really though..who gives a shit?

PS. i promise this will be my last phase of experimenting with facial fuzz. There’ll be no more random moustaches and no more month old beards.

Something Wicked This Way Comes

This is a special Halloween mixtape, feel free to download it if you want. I threw it together this afternoon in the midst of a hangover. Apologies for the quality of the track “Dragula”. The bitrate was really low and i only realised halfway through the mix. I would have left the track out if i’d known but i recorded the mix all in one go and made the mistake of not checking the quality of the tracks first. Like i said i was hungover and it was a last minute thing. I just had a quick browse through some of my music files and took the songs i thought to be most apt for a Halloween mix.

Happy 20th Birthday to Warp Records

warp-logo

WIth today being the last day of the month and also considering the fact that this month signalled the 20th birthday of one of the most respected and well known independent labels in the UK, if not the world. Warp Records. I think it’s only fair that i should have a post to signify this celebration. Founded in 1989 by Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell (who sadly passed away in 2001) the label has shown faith in a lot of more supposedly “leftfield” or awkward acts. Some of their earliest label signings included Nightmares On Wax, Aphex Twin and Autechre. Their main output for the best part of their early years and indeed most of the 90’s was IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) and other electronica type material but in recent years (say about 2000 onwards maybe) they have taken to casting out their net over a wider spectrum and taken on more apparently “indie” bands such as Maximo Park or Grizzly Bear. In 2006 they also released the debut album of one the best live bands i’ve ever seen, Battles. In fact my favourite electronic duo Boards of Canada (sorry MSTRKRFT, don’t worry, i still love you too!) have released pretty much all their material , apart from their really early stuff, on Warp. Some of my other favourite artists on Warp include Flying Lotus, Andrew Weatherall/Two Lone Swordsmen, Squarepusher and Luke Vibert.

Warp have also branched out and set up a few sublabels. Lex Records, Gift Records and Arcola. Gift Records was predominantly set up for “indie” music more than electronica and is reasonably famous for originally having signed up Pulp before they made the jump to Island Records and stardom. Whereas Lex Records roster includes Neon Neon, Boom Bip, Heartbreak and more. Thats 3 seriously good electronic artists/bands right there if you ask me. Arcola meanwhile is more disco/dance orientated and remains fairly underground, one of the more well known acts being Brothomstates (who i hear you say).

warp collection

The label has also made the leap into more cinematic waters with the set up of Warp Films in 1999. Warp Films, along with Chris Cunningham, were responsible for the infamous Aphex Twin “Come To Daddy” and “Windowlicker” videos among many other music videos by various other Warp artists. They also released the Arctic Monkeys short film “Scummy Man” and gave a release to the Chris Morris directed “My Wrongs”, a film about a man who talks to a dog. Some of the more famous features on Warp Films come from director Shane Meadows. The label has released both his “Dead Mans Shoes” and “This Is England” movies.

Warp have also released a number of music and video compilations and a special AI series over the years. They also now have a digital download store (http://bleep.com/)  which originally started off as Warp only releases but has expanded to include other artist in recent years. There’s also a book, simply called “Warp”, which includes an in-depth look at all aspects of the label and a full discography.

So all in all going into their 20th year, Warp aren’t looking too bad at all. From day one they’ve released music and videos from eclectic artists the world over, branched into films, digital downloading whilst all the while keeping faith in the sounds they love just as much as we do.

Here’s just some of the sounds Warp has given us over the years…

MP3s:

Aphex Twin – Donkey Rhubarb

Boards Of Canada – Chromakey Dreamcoat

Autechre – Eutow

Flying Lotus – Braethe Something/Stellar Star

Battles – Atlas

Hudson Mohawke – Polkadot Blues

Nightmares On Wax – Jorge

Jackson And His Computer Band – Utopia

Squarepusher – Don’t Go Plastic

Clark – Night Knuckles

VIDEOS

So to one of my favourite labels i’ll say,

Happy Birthday Warp. Here’s to another Twenty.
