Axe A Dent and Emerge and See

Apologies for the late weekend mixtape but i’ve been a busy boy. As many of you will know, this Wednesday past happened to be the 9/9/09. I was going to make a special mixtape up on the Wednesday to commemorate this once in a lifetime date. Well, my lifetime anyway, unless i somehow live till September 2109. Anyways, i couldn’t get round to making the mix up on the Wednesday due to more important matters, ie. getting drunk and watching the Scotland vs Holland game round the local watering hole. So i thought to myself “i’ll make it on the Thursday”….but i was too hungover. Friday? Went and seen a friends band playing in Stereo (i’ll post some stuff soon). Saturday? Couldn’t. It’s a long story.
But!……… But! Today i finally got the time to make it. The theme of the mix takes on a 999/Accident & Emergency vibe, so bands and songs that were included had to have that kinda slant to their name. Things along the lines of Police, Ambulance, Criminals, Fire, Accidents etc. Hope you enjoy!

Standing On The Edge Of Pop

Hot on the trails of the $elling Out mixtape comes “Standing On The Edge Of Pop”. The concept stays the same on this mix. Although this time its not quite so blatant. $elling Out was designed as a mix that (hopefully) everybody would recognise the songs from. Tracks and artists that pretty much everyone has or should have heard of at some point in their musical life. Standing On The Edge however is a more varied mix that features artists and songs who are well known and some artists who (i believe) should have pop recognition but are still unknown to a certain extent, well unknown to most ears anyway. All of the bands involved in the mix have a certain degree of pop sensibility regarding melody thus their tunes are catchy. Any one of the songs wouldn’t sound out of place on your work radio. Depending on which station you listen to that is. Unfortunately for me, everyone in the garage i work in has a taste in Clyde 102.5 or Real Radio….both are pish. Bring back XFM Scotland! ….. Back to the mix, i tried to make it as variable as i could to cater for many different types of listeners. Every song is a pop gem, some you’ll recognise, some you won’t but i hope you enjoy nonetheless.

$elling Out (Out $elling)

$elling Out (Out $elling) i$ thi$ weekend$ mixtape. I came up with the platform for thi$ mix during my night$hift$ in the early $ummer month$. I thought it would be a good idea to have $ong$ that were “commercial” and have chopped/ma$hed/$pliced/de$troyed ver$ion$ of them all on a mixtape together and i al$o decided, that, ju$t to take away from the whole ma$h up feature i would throw in a few remixe$ of $ome other “commercial” $ong$ i like a$ well. I fir$t $tarted putting thi$ mix together in June, i let $ome friend$ hear a demo ver$ion of the mix at a pre-Union of Knive$ BBQ on the 25th of June….the night Michael Jack$on died……the mix went down rea$onably well but there were one or two element$ of it that i wa$n’t happy with $o i changed a few bit$ and bob$ and made the fini$hed article. It took me quite a while to get round to fini$hing the mix a$ a whole and there wa$ one $ong that no matter how much i altered i couldn’t fix the quality, $o i’ll apologi$e in advance for the bad $ound quality on the mp3 of the Metro $tation remix, it i$ noticeable, you can hear the $ound drop radically and it $ound$ really di$tant but thankfully it only la$t$ a few minute$ then the quality i$ back to normal for the re$t of the mix. Once again, plea$e accept my apologie$…i’ll make up for it with $omething $pecial.

Found Fun, Lost Weekend

The Found Fun, Lost Weekend mitxtape was something i decided to put together early yesterday morning. All the songs were chosen on the spot, i had no certain tracks or anything that i was gonna work off of they way that i usually do. I just wanted to make a soundtrack that we could stick on back home after The Bloody Beetroots gig last night (one of the top 3 gigs i’ve been to, easily, but more about that soon). So i started off the mix with a bit of humour then straight into one of my own remixes and then from there onwards just some wonky, glitchy, digital dance music followed by some fast rapping infused songs and then onto a kinda chillout section at the end.

**DOWNLOADING MY MP3’s**

An important update on how to get a hold of the audio files that i put on the site. WordPress has changed the format that allowed you to just right click and save files as. If you try it now it’ll just download an HTML document of the file. But fear not you can still download the songs for free with no bother at all. Just follow these simple steps.

1. Left click on the song you want (all songs are highlighted in orange). The file will then open in a new page.
2. Then simply right click and save target as and file should start downloading OR left click the file once more and it will pop up and give you the option of saving the file.

Please have PATIENCE when downloading the MP3’s, if it doesn’t start straight away, give it at least 5 or 10 seconds to start.

I recommend that everybody should try out the new downloading format with this song…

**MIXTAPE INFORMATION!**
—————————————-

All of the mixtapes i’ve made will be even easier to download from now on. I know some people have had problems downloading the Mixtapes due to problems with Mediafire and WordPress. But i’m onto it as we speak. I’ve started uploading all the Mixtape MP3’s onto 4shared.com and i’ll update all previous Mixtape posts with links to each individual mix on 4shared. Also any future Mixtapes will have their respective “4shared” links posted alongside them. So that puts that to rest.

Please feel free to go find all the previous Mixtapes and download them and let me know what you think. You can find them all in the category “the weekend mixtape tape” on the top right of this page.

Technophobia

Technophobia is by far the loudest and most “sudden” of my mixes so far. There’s no introductions, no voice samples, no bridging between songs and no ending as such. The idea to make it came to me after i had my Ipod on shuffle and  a few songs came on back to back that just seemed to fit perfect together. And that was the birth of this mix. I decided on the name Technophobia because i could use it as a kinda double edged word. On one hand it could be used as a term for “fear of dance/techno music” and on the other it could be used to desribe the actual mix, as it’s technically not techno music i’m using (maybe i have a fear of techno, get it?). It’s more of an electro feel to it, albeit very heavy electro. Hope you enjoy.

Play it loud to annoy the neighbours.

Scared of....YES, THIS WOMAN HAS JUST HEARD THE TECHNOPHOBIA MIXTAPE….

2009: A Robot Odyssey

2009: A Robot Odyssey is my second mixtape. Yet again, recorded all in the one go and yet again under 1 hour and 2o minutes in duration (fits on a cd no problem).  On the first mixtape (VCPE) i went for an almost kinda rock vibe, electronic as well but mostly rock. So on Robots i’ve decided to go not quite as guitar orientated and tried my best to stick to a dancier side, although there are a few more rockier types in amongst the mix and they do work quite well alongside the rest of the tracks.

Once more i’ve decided to add bits and loop, cut and sample again over most of the songs to make them “edits” as such i suppose and not really remixes, there are a few that i’ve properly remixed, the rest are just edits though.

Just as VCPE had outtakes from some films, Robots does too. There’s also a small introduction and end speech by Microsoft Anna so listen closely. The mix starts off slowly then builds up. About 3 or 4 songs in i decided to use some more “commercial/poppier” material (AVH, Daft Punk, Soulwax etc) but then go back to more beat driven music. I had to do a slight edit on the last track by Black Strobe. Just shortened it down a bit to allow the mix to be under 80 minutes long. You might notice the jump in that track too. I can only apologise for that.

I;m gonna put this mix up on Mediafire soon so it will be available for unlimited download but for the moment just left click once on the mp3 below and it’ll open in a different page then simply right click and save target as.

ViCiOuScOuNtErPoPeRoSiOn

ViciousCounterPopErosion is the first mixtape i made. It contains remixes and edits of songs that i’ve done and also some of my favourite songs that i’ve maybe just tweaked a little by adding a beat , dub, sample, loop or a break and so on.

The mix also contains some out-takes from some of my favourite films (i’ll let you see if you can spot them yourself) and part of a Barack Obama speech (i thought it fitted nicely between two certain songs/themes).

ViciousCounterPopErosion is pretty heavy/loud/fast paced the whole way through so at the end i thought i’d stop the noise dead in its tracks and bring the level down a notch or two with one of my favourite new bands The Temper Trap. Very different from the rest of the mix, some might say too different but i thought it was the ideal way to finish the last 4 minutes.

I recorded and mixed the collection all in one go, it lasts about 1 hour 18 mins (short enough to fit on to a standard CD), all the songs meld into each other. Unfortunately i don’t have the software or know how to make the file into a ZIPfile/folder. Sorry. Just means you’ll have to listen to the mix the whole way through!….or skip it to a certain song, i suppose. Up to yourself.

To download: right click and save target as
To just listen: click once and file will open on its own page, then hover over and play using the flash player, allow the file a few seconds to load. Don’t be impatient!

4. Shy Child – Drop The Phone
5. Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit/Alavi Version (Someone’s In The Wolf Remix)
6. Primal Scream – Miss Lucifer (Someone’s In The Wolf Short Edit)
7. The Presets (Someone’s In The Wolf Remix)
8. Justice – Waters Of Nazareth (Someone’s In The Wolf Short Edit)

True Love Waits and The Weight of True Love

broken heart

I know its Valentines Day tomorrow  and i don’t want to dampen the mood for people but seen as today is Friday the 13th i’ve decided to put a post up for those that are unlucky in love. Songs for people that have experienced broken hearts, for people that have broke hearts themselves (everybody has) and for the lots of people who will spend Valentines Day alone this year.

The first bunch of songs are ones of loss, hurt and memories. The usual suspects like Jeff Buckley and Bon Iver are in there but there’s a few others that i thought would fit in quite nice. I’m not Coldplays biggest fan but even i can’t deny “The Scientist” is a touching ode to lost love. The Twilight Singers went for an orchestral background and a boy/girl conversation type song on “Number Nine”.  Whereas “No One’s Gonna Love You” by Band of Horses and “Maps” by the YYY’s are more stripped back but no less haunting. The Postal Service also go for the boy/girl conversation point of view on the ethereal “Nothing Better” whislt managing to keep their trademark bleepy sound. Mystery Jets, Chairlift and Bloc Party bring an indie touch to the mix with tales of bruised love (literally) and broken dreams . Frightened Rabbit’s song about “getting your hole” (as they so delicately put it) offers something a bit more awkward and an altogether different outlook on finding love or thinking you’ve found love. And then there’s the classic break up song by Fleetwood Mac. “Go Your Own Way” was written and recorded just after band members Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks broke up and the tension and emotion is clear for all to hear as they share vocal duties.

MP3s
Jeff Buckley – Last Goodbye
Bon Iver – Skinny Love
Coldplay – The Scientist
The Twilight Singers (feat Mark Lanegan) – Number Nine
Band Of Horses – No One’s Gonna Love You
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps
Mystery Jets – Flakes
Chairlift – Bruises
Bloc Party – I Still Remember
Frightened Rabbit – Keep Yourself Warm
Fleetwood Mac – Go Your Own Way

hmed_brokenheart
The next trio of songs are the polar opposite of the ones above. Instead of  getting you down or making you feel sorry for yourself these songs might make you feel better about a break up. From the slightly sarcastic and provoking “I Never Wanted You” by Headphones, right though to the pretty blatant “fuck you” blasts from The Avalanches and McAlmont & Butler.

MP3s
Headphones – I Never Wanted You
The Avalanches – Since I Left You
McAlmont & Butler – Yes

The last song doesn’t really need any description. One of the most simple but moving songs ever. Probably something to do with the fact that Thom Yorkes vocals still sound so fragile when he sings live.

MP3: Radiohead – True Love Waits (live)

hearts on hands

And thats it for my first real post. Don’t worry they won’t all be this doomy and gloomy. It just happens to be one of those days today.
