All Yesterdays Parties

The last week or so has been absolutely sensational for gigs in Glasgow. Some i did make, some i didn’t make and one got cancelled altogether. Over the course of 6 days from the Tuesday (14th December) to Sunday (the 19th) there were some pretty amazing shows performed and played throughout Glasgow and it’s various musical locations. Below i’ve compiled a list of the best gigs and included MP3’s (where available), videos and links.

The week should have began with Civil Civic but they sadly had to cancel their gig at The 13th Note last Monday. But since they’re so good we’ll include them anyway and just imagine in our heads and ears that they blew the roof off of The Note!

Pixel Perfect

Have you ever thought how fucking cool it would be if all your favourite 80’s computer games came alive and invaded New York?

Nah, i didn’t think so. Me neither.

But here it is! French film-maker/musician Patrick Jean has put together a video that has Pac Man, Space Invaders, Tetris and many more all teaming up for a pixelated 8-bit assault on the Big Apple.

MP3: Rival Consoles – 1985

MP3: Phinz – Atari Disco

MP3: Boards Of Canada – Hi Scores

Seeing that video reminded me of a post that i’d had planned for ages ago but never got round to. I was planning on doing a Monday List based on 8-bit tracks and chiptunes. Like i said, i never got round to it. I may one day but until then you can enjoy these select few songs of computer generated madness courtesy of Scotlands very own Firebrand Boy and the young 8 bit genius from Edinburgh that i’ve championed for the last 18 months or so, Unicorn Kid. Also worth a listen is the fabulously named Unicorn Dream Attack. Unicorns seem popular in the chiptune world.

MP3: Firebrand Boy – In The Warm Mad Night

MP3: Firebrand Boy – Such Great Heights (Postal Service cover)

MP3: Unicorn Kid – Dream Catcher

MP3: Unicorn Dream Attack – b34ut1ful 3y3s

MP3: Unicorn Dream Attack – Monkey Gone To Heaven (Pixies cover)

I’ll try and get an 8bit themed Monday List up soon. There are a lot of artists out there worth mentioning. A few have been mentioned on this site before but there’s so much unrecognised talent out there. The first person who got me really into chip music a few years ago was a guy who went under the name of “Radio Waves Goodbye”, sadly he seems to have disappeared now and stop releasing music under that name but it was through listening to him i got into another dude called “Silent Requiem” and then it was just a juggernaut from there…..Huoratron, Breakbeat Heartbeat, SHE, Unicorn Kid, Firebrand Boy, Nordloaf, Amanaguchi and many many more. It really is a genre worth pursuing and exploring. Different, unique and ultimately enjoyable.

Something Wicked This Way Comes

This is a special Halloween mixtape, feel free to download it if you want. I threw it together this afternoon in the midst of a hangover. Apologies for the quality of the track “Dragula”. The bitrate was really low and i only realised halfway through the mix. I would have left the track out if i’d known but i recorded the mix all in one go and made the mistake of not checking the quality of the tracks first. Like i said i was hungover and it was a last minute thing. I just had a quick browse through some of my music files and took the songs i thought to be most apt for a Halloween mix.

Legal Aliens

usb-cd-rock-mini-jukeboxOk first things first, Jukebox Cinema is a new section were i’m going to be putting up posts about films. It could be a new upcoming release, it could be an old favourite of mine, it could be an absolutely devastatingly bad film that me and my friends have vocally torn to shreds over and over (Cradle of Fear springs to mind) yet still find ourselves somehow drawn to watching it or last but not least it could be just any old film i fancy writing about. So why the jukebox part in the title? Well all the films will be accompanied by mp3’s that are somehow related to them either through subject matter or title so thats where the “jukebox” comes in….

District9

DISTRICT 9

District 9 is an alien/sci-fi film set in a pre-millenium Johannesburg. It’s directed by Neill Blomkamp, you may recognise the name. He was apparently due to make the movie adaption of Halo before the project fell on its arse, so to speak. Its also produced by Peter Jackson (he of LotR fame).

The storyline is pretty simple so i won’t go into to much detail. Aliens land in South Africa, the military and government find them, house them in a Government refugee camp and keep them quarantined from human society in an area called District 9. Then the fun begins….

It’s released over here on the 4th September (next Friday), i can’t wait to go see it.

Mp3’s
1. Blink 182 – Alien’s Exist
2. Monster Magnet – Space Lord
3. Prodigy – Out Of Space
4. Radiohead – Subterranean Homesick Alien
5. Unicorn Kid – Wee Monsters
6. Mogwai – Angels Versus Aliens
7. Spacemen3 – Take Me to the Other Side
8. Muse – Space Dementia
9. Suicide – Spaceship
10. Babylon Zoo – Spaceman

T In The Park Review (Part 2) – The NEW(ish) Aural Delights

Ok after much delay (been busy at work recently) i’ve finally gotten round to my feelings on the 5 best new-ish artist/bands at T in the Park 2009.

1. THE TEMPER TRAP
First band up are the Temper Trap, i first heard them back in December 2008 and have been going on about them ever since (i mentioned them in my Tips for 2009 blog back in February too).  Sweet Disposition was the song that caught my attention originally and then i looked up a few other tracks. Namely Peter Parker and Science of Fear. But it wasn’t until i managed to get a hold of the album that i could really appreciate them….. or so i thought. The experience of seeing them live was easily one of the highlights of this years festival. And the song “Fader” easily wins title of Feel Good Hit of The Summer.

2. THE BIG PINK
Next up is The Big Pink, a noisy duo who have been compared sound wise to  The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and countless other “shoegaze” bands. And although the walls of noise they create are a fair comparison, the Big Pink still manage to create a different structure by using beats that will remind the listener more of an industrial sound rather than dreamy noise pop. This may have something to do with the fact that Robin Furze was a founder member of noise merchants Panic DHH and also done time as a guitarist with punk-electronic legend Alec Empire. Meanwhile the other member of Big Pink, Milo Cordell, just happens to be the son of a 60’s pop producer. Milo also runs the Merok record label which has released a load of  material from disco-punk orientated bands including  the Klaxons. Mix these two guys together and you get the ethereal sounds of The Big Pink. Loud and straight to the point but strangely quiet and distant at the same time.

3. UNICORN KID
Olly Sabin, otherwise known as Unicorn Kid made his first appearnce at T in the Park this year. Hiding behind his trademark Lion Hat (they’ll be the next big fasion accessory soon, even i have one!) he manages to somehow throw out bleeps and blips through his speakers and meld them into the catchiest melodies of the year so far. He has rode a wave of publicity this summer following numerous appearances on Radio 1 and Xfm and also his own headling tour which culminated at Balado. The demand for this 17 year old from Edinburgh is huge at the moment. What started out as hype has evolved into absolutely massive stadium sized songs. Unicorn Kid is definitely one for the future. Listen and justify the hype for yourself.

4. DANANANANAKROYD
Possibly the weirdest name, no wait, DEFINITELY the weirdest name to appear on this blog (so far) is Dananananakroyd. Trying saying that whilst under the influence. They are a six piece (formerly 9 piece!) from Glasgow. Their music is just as strange as their name. Due to the nature of the screamed vocals they have often been put in the “Post Hardcore” genre. I hate labelling bands into genres. To me Dananananakroyd are more pop music but just in an unconventional sense. There are a more few songs on their debut album “Hey Everyone!” that could be deemed “radio friendly” though. But not in the sense of being radio friendly like “Nickel-fucking shite-back”.  The band have gained notoriety and a cult following through touring constantly and they were certainly a sight to see and hear at T in the Park. Random Fact: Ex-drummer Laura is married to Futureheads frontman Barry Hyde!

5. WE WERE PROMISED JETPACKS
Lastly we come to a band who are tipped for big things in the very near future. We Were Promised Jetpacks are 4 Edinburgh school friends who formed a few years after the turn of the milennium in 2003. They sing songs of lost love and despair in their own accents. Remind you of anybody? Glasvegas maybe? Well, this 4 piece sound nothing like Glasvegas, there’s no ungodly distortion, no smokey stages, no sunglasses indoors. Just raw emotion and menacingly plucked guitars. Everybody wants a piece of this band at the moment. And this has been solidified by the fact that the boys will be spending the rest of their summer and most of September playing Germany followed by a massive US tour with fellow Scottish bands Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad.

MP3: We Were Promised Jetpacks – Moving Clocks Run Slow

Honourable mentions for new bands that i heard at T in the Park also go to Broken Records, The Phantom Band, Delphic, Pulled Apart By Horses and finally a band who more than match Dananananakroyd on the name front….The Seal Cub Clubbing Club.
