Progress For Chi

As you may or may not know, Chi Cheng (bass player of Deftones) was in a car accident in November 2008 and is currently in a “minimally conscious” state.

I’ve previously posted links to the website set up to raise funds for his care and i make no apologies for doing so again. Please donate…. oneloveforchi.

Over the last 3 and bit years Chi has been very slowly making progress and at the beginning of this month there was a heart warming and encouraging moment when he lifted his leg on request. It’s one very small step in a long, long road to recovery.

Deftones are and always will be one of my favourite bands but, even though their last album and latest live shows were phenomenal, i just can’t help but feel their not quite complete without the presence of Chi. My best wishes go out to all the Cheng and Deftones family.

Obligatory Valentines Post

MP3: The Cure – Love Song

You’re always on my mind,
Ever since we met.
You’re always in my thoughts,
Impossible to forget.
You’re always in my heart,
Which puts me in your debt.
You’re always in my dreams,
And my dreams are always wet.

If you’re one of the “forever alone” types….

…..then fear not cos at least you’re probably not as fucked up as these kinda people…..or maybe you are.

He Is Nimdok

When someone is described to you as “sounds like Fear Factory and Tool teaming up to have a barfight with Dub Trio and Allan Holdsworth whilst Rachels try to break it all up” you just know you’ve got to check them out.

I’m glad i did. This is definitely one to be categorized in the “attacking your speakers” section.

I AM Nimdok is the recording name of 24 year old Ryuki Akira. It’s a project he started back in September 2011 and it’s certainly a project that hasn’t taken long to come to real fruition. As of yesterday you can go download his debut EP “The Wave. The Raven. The Invisible Dream” for free from the I AM Nimdok bandcamp. It ticks all the right boxes for me. Instrumental. Different. Progressive. Loud. The musicianship on all 6 tracks is disturbingly flawless and is made all the more apealling by the fact that Akira plays every single key, chord and beat on the EP. Even haters of the experimental side of metal music will struggle to find a downside to the 6 tracks on show.

“Primagen” starts thing off with a stuttering beat before going all epic on us. Next up is “Staring Into Darkstar” (my favourite track) which reminds me of the days when My Vitriol were heavy as fuck. Then it’s the piano led “Endless” which could be seen as the EPs ballad if you like. “Freeland” comes over as the most operatic track with it’s strings constantly swelling and swirling. “Intro 7” literally is what it says on the tin, a soundtrack-esque intro to the closing track “7” which begins with an almost silent ambient noisescape before launching into a series of brain melting riffs and then changing into an almost trance like affair before returning to it’s crushing, behemoth riffs and rounding off an amazing debut EP which ends on a eerie note with what sounds like a ghost ship sailing off.

A month or so ago all the tracks were posted on the I AM Nimdok  soundcloud page but were only available for streaming. So i, for one, am grateful to finally be able to get these little futuristic sounding musical nuggets onto my iPod. If you know what’s good for your ears you would do the same. The fact that it’s a free EP makes it 2012’s bargain of the year already.

Listen to the song below and then go download the EP.

Oh and just for the record….if it came to a bar fight then my money is on Fear Factory and Tool.

Listen To The Girl

I don’t really have to write much in this post. All you need to know is that it’s for a good cause and you should go buy it.

11 bands . 1 song . All profits to Breast Cancer Care.

Full tracklisting and details here.

I’ll be honest, before i downloaded this the only contributing artists i’d heard of were Keep Shelly In Athens and Laki Mera. I’m glad to have been introduced to We Are Enfant Terrible and the rest. As a whole the album is worth the download but my favourite track is the dream like take on the JMC classic by Keep Shelly In Athens.

MP3: Keep Shelly In Athens – Just Like Honey [Jesus And Mary Chain cover]

….of course i couldn’t finish off without leaving you with the original.

Don’t Call It A Comeback……

So i’ve once again decided to restart the Someone’s In The Wolf blog. This time for reals! Any regular readers will know that at the end of last spring i stopped posting altogether and then made a rather lackluster attempt at starting to post again in the summer. 2011 was a massively up, down, back up then down again year for me due to various personal reasons.  But with those 12 months behind me i’m in the mood to get back to blogging.

While i’ve been away i’ve discovered a lot of new music and i’m massively looking forward to sharing it with you. I’ll be regularly posting monday lists, video doses, the six mix, gig reviews and cover posts just like before but i’ll also be throwing in a few new categories each month. One such new category will be a Soundcloud special each month. I only really started regularly using Soundcloud last summer and in terms of finding and sharing music it’s definitely one of the best sites out there.

So, what better way to kick start a new beginning for Someone’s In The Wolf by posting you a few new tracks that i’ve discovered through Soundcloud recently….

Ethereal and haunting pop in a similar vein to M83 and Gotye.
MP3: Eight and a Half – Scissors

No words. Just dark beats and mysterious bass from New York.
MP3: Clubs For Boardgames – Swampwalker

Danish band with a penchant for big riffs and catchy choruses.
MP3: Little Yells Alot – Zoo City
