Attention Span

I’ve not had nearly enough time to get as much 2011 posts up as i’d like to. As usual it’s a culmination of many things preventing me. Lack of time, work, family, friends and a new addition to the reasons…..jamming. My old band “The Gorecki” have got back together. So we’ve been busy jamming and rehearsing new tracks and i’ve been spending a lot of time writing some new material for both “The Gorecki” and for an other upcoming boy/girl project i have planned with one of my best friends. More news on that to follow though.

If you wanna keep up to date with any happenings on The Gorecki front then the places to check are The-Gorecki/2 or for a studio diary from our newest member check over at thetwosimons.wordpress.com/.

It’s looking like i’ll have a relatively free evening tomorrow night so i’ll 100% get the rest of the “Best of 2010” lists posted up over the weekend and then we can look ahead to what 2011 has to offer on the music front.

In the meantime, here’s a few songs on rotation on my iPod that have currently been keeping me sane during my busy week at work.

The 30 Best Songs of 2009

Ok so a week into 2010 is a bit late for a “best of 2009” post but any regular readers (are there any?) will know i’ve had problems with hard-drives, my internet connection, my laptop in general and more recently some other stuff has came up that has prevented regular posting recently.

But back to the post..

Deciding on the songs and the order of them for this Top 30 was a hard decision (the Top 30 albums was even harder, post that at the weekend) to make. Basically there were only one rule when picking the list. The rule was that a band can not feature more than once in the list. If that rule wasn’t made then i’d have had the full APTBS album in there, shit, i’ve just gave away the identity of my album of the year haven’t i?

Apart from that it was pretty simple. 30 slots and hundreds of songs. Pick the best.

Remember though, having a song in the Top 30 songs doesn’t automatically mean that the artists will be in the Top 30 album countdown as well. Take for example Yes Giantess, Ou Est Le Swimming Pool and Stuck In The Sound. In the case of YG and OELSP they won’t make the Top albums cos they don’t have one out yet and in the case of Stuck In The Sound its because their album just wasn’t good enough (imo) to be in the Top 30. The song i included here however “Zapruder” is pure shoegaze genius. There’s also the other side of the coin. Bands like The Prodigy, MSTRKRFT and many more brought up absolute brilliant albums in 2009 but even though their albums as a collective were amazing, none of the individual tracks managed to make it into the Top 30 songs.

Sorry i’m not very good at trying to get my point across. I think i might just be trying to justify the fact that i had to leave some amazing songs out of the Top 30. I would have made a Top 500 if i had the time!

So away from the mumbled jibberish that i just wrote, here is the list in countdown style 30 to Number 1

You Can’t Teach Rhythm

This is the last mixtape of 2009 and is largely made up of songs that i played at the Halloween show in D.U.S.K back in October. It doesn’t really need an explaining, its just a straight ahead club/dancefloor type mix. It starts off slowly with a number (pardon the pun) that was aimed to get girls and boys on the dancefloor. It worked at the club that night so put it on at a New Years or Christmas party this year and see if it has the same effect. I decided to splice and cut the whole mix with some radio segments and audio samples i found kicking about online, i was contemplating using them during the gig but thought best not to incase i interrupted the flow of the music. I liked the idea of using segments and speach samples cos it reminded of my favourite album of all time, Songs For The Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age. The rest of the mix is just some glitchy, techno, electro songs that i enjoy. I put a few beats and bleeps into certain songs to try and maintain that live feel that i got during the gig.

If you download this mix i’d definitely recommend playing it at full volume for full effect.

THE MONDAY LIST #8:…They Tore Down The Berlin Wall

Berlin Wall

Today marks the twentieth anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, which effectively was the Fall of Communism in Germany. The wall was built in 1961 and wasn’t pulled down until the 9th of November 1989. With me having a German grandmother i’ve always had a keen interest in all things German from a young age and have been told many stories about the Berlin wall by my Gran and my mum.

Seeing as this isn’t a history lesson though i’m not going to waffle on about the Berlin Wall, i’ll get to the point, this weeks list is a collection of German bands/artists, mainly hailing from Berlin but some from other areas. And also included in the list is one song about the Wall itself.

For anybody that does want to know anymore about the Berlin Wall and its collapse then have a look here…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Wall

or if you have a spare ten minutes and have an interest in the subject have a look at this..

Now for a few bonus videos…

First, a classic from the Jesus and Mary Chain revivalists…

VIDEO: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Berlin

Next, a cheesy 80’s ballad, perhaps a guilty pleasure for some……i’m not saying anything….

VIDEO: Berlin – Take My Breath Away

And lastly a video for a song that at first glance may seem to have absolutely nothing to do with Berlin but listen to the lyrics…
It’s also one of my favourite songs of all time, it’s not played anywhere near enough in clubs! Thats why i had to give it a spin during my set a few weeks back 🙂

VIDEO: Primal Scream – Detroit

“they tore down the Berlin Wall, they let the hammer and sickle fall, they fitted me for a uniform, they had it ready the day i was born”

ps. VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE

I’ve sorted out the MP3 links now, so instead of having to open the file/song up in a new page and then downloading it you should now be able to just hover over the MP3 you desire and “right click and save target as” and the song is yours. It would be much appreciated if you let me know if it works or not, i’m not very good at all the technical sides of blogging so feedback or help is welcome! Thanks

I will at some point go back and change all the links for the MP3’s from previous posts so they are all easily accessible and downloadable, so don’t be shy to have a check through and download whatever tracks you want.

Technophobia

Technophobia is by far the loudest and most “sudden” of my mixes so far. There’s no introductions, no voice samples, no bridging between songs and no ending as such. The idea to make it came to me after i had my Ipod on shuffle and  a few songs came on back to back that just seemed to fit perfect together. And that was the birth of this mix. I decided on the name Technophobia because i could use it as a kinda double edged word. On one hand it could be used as a term for “fear of dance/techno music” and on the other it could be used to desribe the actual mix, as it’s technically not techno music i’m using (maybe i have a fear of techno, get it?). It’s more of an electro feel to it, albeit very heavy electro. Hope you enjoy.

Play it loud to annoy the neighbours.

Scared of....YES, THIS WOMAN HAS JUST HEARD THE TECHNOPHOBIA MIXTAPE….
