As i mentioned previously i made a 5 hour Halloween playlist for my friend Morgan who is studying in America just now. She had her dorm party last night, i hope it went well.
So this is the first part of the Halloween mixtapes i promised. This is just a short “creepy” one. It clocks in at about 40 odd minutes. While walking home late at night earlier this week i came up with the concept of making an atmospheric and “intimidating” mixtape that could be used at the beginning of a party, maybe just as the guests are arriving or whatever. My original idea was to make it a bit longer but i was pressed for time so just quickly recorded this one.
The songs i used are ones that i think hell (if there is one) would sound like.
I fell in love with the Drop The Lime remix of “Ruins” as soon as i heard it. The Burial Hex ones speak for themselves. The Wolf Eyes track is borderline terrifying. Aphex Twin as usual is slightly deranged and as for the A Place To Bury Strangers track…well, to me “Falling Sun” has always sounded like the noise that would be playing when the world ends.

I’ll get another mixtape up before the weekend is out. I’ve also made a massive 5 hour one for my friends party so i’ll try post some tracks off of that as well and i’ll get some more Halloween themed stuff up too before Hallow’s Eve eventually arrives…
I thought i’d sign off this post with a picture that i KNOW will give a certain female friend the creeps……..you know who you are!
If i have time after work tomorrow night i’ll get another post up about other creepy Halloween creatures. Maybe witches, monsters, demons, skeletons, vampires etc.
I’ve decided i’m keeping with the Halloween theme until it arrives so for the rest of the week there’ll be posts assosciated with Halloween type stuff.
It was the Phantoms turn yesterday so today it’s time to open up the old “do you believe in them or not?” debate….
I had fun searching through my hard drive for “ghostly” songs. I had a lot more than i thought i would’ve. I picked a select few and tried to keep the musical styles as varied as possible. Just right click and save as to download.
I’ve noticed in my “Stats” department recently that the key search word used on Google, by people who stumble across this blog unintentionally, during the last week or so has been “phantom”. I think it’s because the picture i used in this Halloween post last year is one of the first to pop up in the Google image search engine. Anyway it’s time to bring back the Phantom in the form of his very own Monday List.

This afternoon i’m off to the The 13th Note (oh, how i’ve missed you these last 2 months!) in Glasgow for the now annual activity of Buckfest. Starting as the brainchild of cult Glasgow band The Bucky Rage it has morphed into a gritty two day noise-fest. It showcases some of the best underground talent in Scotland and also includes a few guests from elsewhere.
Unfortunately this year i can only make it along today as tomorrow i have some other plans…..basically, i get to catch up with my dad and we’ll get drunk and moan about how bad TV is.
Here’s the full line up with some links…(where possible)
10.30 Charles Randolph Rivers’ Slim Rhythm Revue Scotland’s premier purveyor of one man band vintage rock n roll. http://www.myspace.com/slimrhythmrevue

DJ’s ‘Jim Shit’ and ‘Joe Eruption’ spinning choice vinyl throughout the day to keep your toes tapping and your ears ringing til midnight.
“Inteligencia” is my brother in laws new band. It consists of ex members of You Can’t Eat The Word Food and the guitarist from Da Gramsci and my mate Symey, the bassist, from Filthy Little Secret. So they’re a bit of a Glasgow supergroup if you like. Buckfest is their first show. Gary (my bro in law) always puts everything into his shows so i’m really looking forward to a raw performance today. Since the split of his old band Gary has continued recording (as he always does) under various guises but will be the first time in a while he’s set foot on stage with the band/gang mentality. I’m excited.
Also, Gary recently started a blog. It’s sure to be worth checking out for random musings and jolly banter. He’s over at Chairman Cow.
Filthy Little Secret themselves are headlining the Sunday night. Symey is just being greedy! And a little warning to all the ladies out there who like their tall ginger men…..prepare to swoon! Josh Homme has nothing on Symey!
Here’s some videos and tracks of what to expect from a few of the artists…..
7 Years ago today the late, great Elliott Smith died. There is still some debate as to whether he committed suicide or not. But that’s another matter altogether. This post is to celebrate the life of Smith and the never ending legacy that he left behind.
I’m a huge fan of his songwriting skills and voice but i’m simply in awe of the raw emotion he could pluck and strum out of 6 simple guitar strings. There are only a handful of people in this universe of ours who can somehow make me feel the way i do when i listen to Elliott Smith tracks. His albums aren’t ones that i listen to when i’m company of friends. No, Elliott Smith is best experienced alone and dare i say it when you’re feeling down. If you know his back story and the struggles he went through then you’ll know what i mean. The words he sings, the way he sings them, the guitar he strums and the way he strums it can inspire anyone, no matter how down you are, to find that little extra bit of strength to pull through the darkest of times.
He was and still is an inspirational figure to myself and many my friends but it’s not just us who love him…….
His songs have been covered by a wide variety of artists and through a huge spectrum of genres. Here’s a select few.
On the 1st of November, Domino Records release a best of Elliott Smith CD simply entitled “An Introduction To……Elliott Smith”. The tracklisting is pretty flawless. Elliott Smith isn’t the easiest person to make a best of compilation for as he has so many songs that are worthy of making the cut but the album has been whittled down to 14 tracks from this supremely talented and gifted artist.
Live he was a phenomenal force. Quiet yet loud. Happy yet sad. Weak yet somehow strong. All the while very shy and very endearing.
You can download a live Elliott Smith set from Stockholm in 1998 here.
Here’s the setlist:
1. Angeles 2. Division Day 3. Clementine 4. Alameda 5. Between the Bars 6. Pictures of Me 7. Waltz #2 8. Rose Parade 9. Some Song 10. Say Yes 11. Needle in the Hay 12. Roman Candle 13. Independence Day 14. Speed Trials 15. 2:45 AM 16. No Name #1 17. Thirteen
I’ve never seen him live in the flesh but i’ve seen a lot of YouTube videos and this one in particular gives me chills every time. You feel like he’s in the room alongside you playing for only you.
Last week i watched a film that had been recommended to me by my friend Chris. You may have heard of it, i hadn’t. It’s a black comedy starring Robin Williams called “The Worlds Greatest Dad”. And when i say black comedy i mean very black. It has moments of almost heartbreaking bleakness but most scenes are almost always complimented with a sense of humour that are enough to lighten up the dark side of the story. It deals with a lot of issues, some quite taboo, with a comedic element yet still manages to get it’s point across every time. As for the characters, everyone of them was played to perfection and after watching it i couldn’t imagine any other actors or actresses in any of the roles. They all seemed to fit. That in itself played a big part in how impressive the film was.
All in all it was genuinely one of the best films i’ve seen in a long time. It got an 87% fresh rating on the notoriously hard to please Rotten Tomatoes so that’s good enough for me!
The main point of this post though was to get some tracks up from the soundtrack. The songs match the film and the story to the point of sounding like they were pretty much written for the script. It’s very rarely that happens in my opinion so i got a bit excited when i heard the tracks and searched and downloaded them almost immediately. One of the most heartbreaking scenes in the film (maybe ever) is the moment Lance (Williams) finds his son………
