Bring The Static Doom

…….so it’s been a while since the last mixtape was posted. Just 3 weeks short of 6 months to be precise. I hope this one can make up for it.

The original idea for this mixtape was to make a glitch effort but once i had whittled down my tracklist it turned into a kinda best of 65daysofstatic and LOD with a bunch of Bring Me The Horizon remix versions and a few other tracks that just seemed to fit. I made it a while ago now, like March or something. My friends and a small gathering of drunken people at an underground nightclub are the only ones to have heard it. It’s not my most inventive mix yet but it is one of my favourites that i’ve put together so far.

The mix begins with John Cusack  introducing (scene from High Fidelity) over a guitar loop from “Death Breath” and kicks into an hour and seventeen minutes of noise. Some breakbeat, some techno, electro, a pinch of glitch, maybe even some indie/punk, a pop princess or two, some sheer white noise, a bit of gabba, a few mash ups, a few oldies, a few new tracks and just for good measure a little appearance from Albert Einstein.

Avenged Toxicity

Last Friday me and my friends Simon and Morgan were driving through to Edinburgh to see Emalkay play a set at the Cabaret Voltaire. The journey was laced with dirty jokes, humorous discussions on which member of S Club 7 was the hottest (none in my opinion) and just general random banter. Morgan seems to have some obsession with trying to find out if i currently have a “thing” for anyone. By “thing” i assume she means someone i like. “You should find a girlfriend!” she shrieks, piercing my eardrum. Even though i’m sitting right next to her in the car. I, of course, keep schtum, like a gentleman should and simply offer a “yeah, actually, there is someone i really like but i’m not telling you” cos i know that’ll irritate her just that teensy bit more! Simon on the other hand freely discusses how and who he spent the previous weekend with. As he always does. Don’t you Simon? You man whore.

Simons weekend bag

Anyway the journey wasn’t just filled with inquisitive minds and stories of indulgence. It was also soundtracked by some pretty fucking amazing music. On the way there we had a mixtape that Si and myself had put together a few days beforehand. It consisted of mainly of ambient chillout music so we quickly swapped for one that i had hastily assembled just half an hour before we left for Edinburgh. It contained some Aphex Twin, Beetroots, Blue Mars, Skream, NIN, Fake Blood and of course the man we were on our way to see, Emalkay.

The gig itself was awesome. Loud, smokey, wonky, glitchy, bassy, scratchy. You know that feeling when you can feel the bass come through your feet? Well imagine that ten fold. Just what i’d hoped for. After the gig and one too many tequila it was back to the car. I genuinely felt sorry for Morgan as she had to drive an inebriated Simon and i all the way back to Glasgow whilst listening to us have a drunken but friendly disagreement about how good/shit Team Sleep are. Just for the record i’m the one who thinks they’re good. In the midst of this verbal battle Morgan had managed to somehow slip the Bring Me The Horizon “Suicide Season” album into her sound system. I didn’t even notice at first. To be honest, they’re a band that i knew about but had never actually heard anything of. Their image and reputation had kinda put me off if truth be told. But i slowly warmed to it. Bit by bit, riff by riff i was converted. One song in particlar stuck out like a sore thumb, “Death Breath”. The opening riff (and main riff throughout) chugs along like a sledgehammer. Josh Homme would be proud. That was my initial thought actually. A few of the riffs could be QOTSA-esque. A lot of bands would kill for an opening riff like that. So after we managed to get through the full “Suicide Season” album i announced, in a drunken state, “I’m gonna *hiccup* download that album *hiccup* in the morning“.

So the morning came and download i did. To my surprise when i downloaded it i was offered the chance to download another version of the album, “Suicide Season: Cut Up”. It’s an album that consists of the same songs on the original only this time they’re all remixed by artists varying from the dude from Gym Class Heroes to The Toxic Avenger. Yes, the Toxic fucking Avenger. The man’s a legend (i’ve posted a few of his tracks before, mainly in the mixtapes section i think, if you haven’t heard him check him out) so when i found out that he had done a remix i had to get both “Suicide Season” and “Suicide Season: Cut Up”. Just by sheer coincidence the song that he remixes is, yes, my favourite track “Death Breath”. He keeps THAT riff yet somehow changes the style completely by sprinkling some of his electro magic over the track. The bite and snarl of the vocals marries well with the bleeps and loops that he chooses to mingle in among the heavy rhythms.

WARNING: THIS MAN WILL FUCK UP YOUR SONGS……IN A GOOD WAY OF COURSE

Clearly Mr Avenger is colourblind

You Can’t Teach Rhythm

This is the last mixtape of 2009 and is largely made up of songs that i played at the Halloween show in D.U.S.K back in October. It doesn’t really need an explaining, its just a straight ahead club/dancefloor type mix. It starts off slowly with a number (pardon the pun) that was aimed to get girls and boys on the dancefloor. It worked at the club that night so put it on at a New Years or Christmas party this year and see if it has the same effect. I decided to splice and cut the whole mix with some radio segments and audio samples i found kicking about online, i was contemplating using them during the gig but thought best not to incase i interrupted the flow of the music. I liked the idea of using segments and speach samples cos it reminded of my favourite album of all time, Songs For The Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age. The rest of the mix is just some glitchy, techno, electro songs that i enjoy. I put a few beats and bleeps into certain songs to try and maintain that live feel that i got during the gig.

If you download this mix i’d definitely recommend playing it at full volume for full effect.

Masquerading Meddling Musicians

With Halloween just around the corner i thought it’d be a good idea to do a post about bands and artists that hide behind sweaty masks, helmets and other head fitting objects whilst plying their trade up on the stage.

Is it for “artisctic” reasons or are they just ugly? Who knows?….Who cares? Let’s be honest, it looks fucking cool if you can pull it off right (take note guys from Slipknot!) and it adds mystery.

So, Halloween lovers, i’d like you to meet….

toxic avenger

The Toxic Avenger

The Toxic Avenger (aka Simon DeLacroix) is a French DJ who puts his focus on making scratch based tracks blended with melody. He usually releases material through the well respected (well i respect them anyway) record label iheartcomix.
MP3: The Toxic Avenger – Superheroes (Toxic Self Version)

bloody beetroots

Bloody Beetroots

What can i say about The Bloody Beetroots that i haven’t said before on this blog? Nothing, thats what. Two absolutely insame Italian DJ’s with a taste for wonky basslines and having fun. What more could we want?
MP3: Bloody Beetroots – Rombo (feat Congorock)

mstrkrft

MSTRKRFT

MSTRKRFT came about while JFK (thats Jesse F Keeler to those unaware) was still playing with Death From Above 1979. Originally started out as a “dancier techno group but NOT a side-project”,  MSTRKRFT succeeded in evolving into a totally different beast after the unfortunate break up of DFA1979. And although i was gutted to say the least when one of my favourite bands of all time broke up, it makes it that little bit easier that we were gifted with some amazing new sounds.
MP3: MSTRKFT – Heartbreaker (feat John Legend)

dead mau5

Deadmau5

Joel Zimmerman or Deadmau5 to you and i is a DJ and producer from Canada who just released his very successful debut album last year. The 28 year old had been on the scene for some years beforehand and began making digitalised music at a very early age. If you go see him play you certainly won’t miss him….he wears an absolutely giant modified Mouse hat/mask/helmet.
MP3: Deadmau5 – I Remember

sound of animals fighting

The Sound of Animals Fighting

Sadly this supergroup don’t exist anymore, they called it a day after providing us with 3 albums and a DVD. The group consisted mainly of member of RX Bandits but over the course of their 5 year life contributers included members of Finch, Atreyu, The Autumns and many more. The music world is a less frenetic place without them, that’s a compliment by the way.
MP3: The Sound Of Animals Fighting – Uzbekistan

The Knife

The Knife

Swedish duo The Knife found the big time when Jose Gonzalez done a cover of their song “Heartbeats” and got it featured in THAT Sony advert. That song featured on the album “Silent Shout” , the siblings have since released another album and Karen Dreijer Andersson has went on to release a well acclaimed solo album under the name Fever Ray. Check it out if you can. The Knife are definitely a band that have to be seen live to truly experience the mysterious energy the have in their songs.
MP3: The Knife – We Share Our Mothers Health

redshape

Redshape

Not much is known about the enigma that is Redshape. He’s released 15 maybe 17 tracks maximum over the last few years. Apparently he lives in Berlin but who knows. Redshape is a classic case of a man keeping himself to himself.
MP3: Redshape – Seduce Me

HeartsRevolution

HeartsRevolution

This electro twosome gained notoriety in 2008 not only for their song but also for the HeartsChallenger. the HeartsChallenger is a modified ice cream van that they two used and still do occasionally use to move between gigs. A different take on a tourbus so to speak but i know what i’d rather have. I’ve followed them since late 2007 and annoyingly they didn’t seem to be making any progress or releasing solid material BUT there’s news in the pipeline of a 13 track album coming soon, so it’s all good.
MP3: HeartsRevolution – Choose Your Own Adventure

Daft Punk

Daft Punk

The classic Daft Punk. Call them what you will, “sellouts”, “song thieves”, whatever but the one thing that constantly follows the French robots about is that they were one the pioneers of  French House music and helped get it to where it currently sits in the popularity stakes. Yes, they may steal samples left, right and centre to make their songs but who cares when they make songs as good as “Robot Rock”, “Da Funk” etc
MP3: Daft Punk – Da Funk

Scan 7

Scan 7

Another unknown entity, literally, i have no knowledge of who these guys are or where they come from. I’m guessing Berlin but only cos of the type of songs they seem to produce.
MP3: Scan 7 – Bad Mood Rising

the network

The Network

The Network is a classic case of a famous band trying to create an alter ego and fucking it up royally. Before they had even released anything everybody knew who they were, it’s Green Day in disguise! Back in the days when i read Kerrang (yes, i’m ashamed) there was an article outing them and when the songs were released it only confirmed what was already known. Billie Joe Armstrong has one of the most distinctive voices in music, who were they trying to fool?
MP3: The Network – Roshambo

doctor lektroluv

Dr Lektroluv

The Doc is a Belgian DJ with a rather dapper and eccentric stage persona. Not only does he wear a tuxedo and a green mask on stage, he also mixes his sets with the assistance of a telephone instead of the usual headphones. He’s been around since the early noughties and releases several mixes on the N.E.W.S label.
MP3: Dr Lektroluv – Moscow Discow

Altern8

Altern8

Haha, god, Altern8, the bass heavy rave monsters. Famed for there chemical suits and face masks the Stafford duo had a habit of playing at “illegal” rave parties back in the early 90’s. At a time when such events were banned, Altern8 made a name for themsleves by being bolshy and grabbing the scene by the throat, they changed the rave scene with their new outlook on equipment and tools that managed to make anthems out of a few beats and a synth line.
MP3: Altern8 – Frequency (DFRNT Remix)

kill the noise

Kill The Noise

Ok so these guys probably shouldn’t be in here as only one of them usually wears a mask onstage and sometimes not at all but “Pull My Strings” is too good a song to leave out.
MP3: Kill The Noise – Pull My Strings

I couldn’t come to the conclusion without adding some real love them or hate them bands into the mix….

thelocust

The Locust

These absolute mentalists, led by Justin Pearson, have a real penchant for some very strange song titles indeed. With songs usually lasting no more than a minute and a half they are short, sharp and definitely to the point. I’ve seen them live twice. Both times they were supporting other acts. I didn’t know whether to feel priviliged or violated when i experienced them live but i was intrigued to say the least.
MP3: The Locust – Priest With Sexually Transmitted Disease Get Out Of My Bed

slipknot

Slipknot

Some people hate Slipknot, some love them. I sit on the fence, they don’t bother me. I always go by my belief that every single band/artist has one good song in them and there are two Slipknot songs that i happen to quite enjoy, one being “Wait and Bleed” and the other…
MP3: Slipknot – Left Behind

Now, to finish off the man who has been portrayed in film and theatre by many a mere mortal..the one and only…

phantom

The Phantom Of The Opera

And the conclusion? Simple, masks are cool. Especially at this time of year.

Technophobia

Technophobia is by far the loudest and most “sudden” of my mixes so far. There’s no introductions, no voice samples, no bridging between songs and no ending as such. The idea to make it came to me after i had my Ipod on shuffle and  a few songs came on back to back that just seemed to fit perfect together. And that was the birth of this mix. I decided on the name Technophobia because i could use it as a kinda double edged word. On one hand it could be used as a term for “fear of dance/techno music” and on the other it could be used to desribe the actual mix, as it’s technically not techno music i’m using (maybe i have a fear of techno, get it?). It’s more of an electro feel to it, albeit very heavy electro. Hope you enjoy.

Play it loud to annoy the neighbours.
