THE MONDAY LIST #19: Digital Drugs

Tomorrow marks the release of the tenth anniversary edition of the classic Queens of the Stone Age album “Rated R”. One of my favourite albums of all time by one of my favourite bands of all time.  The album contains references to drugs throughout, no more so than in the opening track “Feel Good Hit of the Summer” where the only lyrics  are “Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol” before a chorus solely made up of the word “Cocaine” comes in. Messy, wonderfully loose and instantly ear catching. The rest of the album follows suit and makes for an absolute classic record.

MP3: Queens of the Stone Age – Feel Good Hit Of The Summer

All the drug references in Rated R gave me  an idea for the next Monday List….

Drugs may be the road to nowhere but at least they’re the scenic route….

DIGITAL DRUGS
________________

1. The Music – Drugs
2. Oceansize – Women Who Love Men Who Love Drugs
3. Union of Knives – We Are All Doing Drugs
4. The Verve – The Drugs Don’t Work
5. Jimmy Eat World – Drugs or Me
6. Adam Green – Drugs
7. Thieves Like Us – Drugs In My Body
8. Ratatat – Drugs
9. Wilco – Handshake Drugs
10. Black Lips – Drugs

There are of course many different types of drugs, too many to list in fact but here are a few bonus tracks.

BONUS TRACKS

MP3: Neon Indian – Should Have Taken Acid With You

MP3: The Magnetic Fields – Take Ecstasy With Me

MP3: Maps – Valium In The Sunshine

MP3: The Velvet Underground and Nico – Heroin

MP3: Phosphorescent – Cocaine Lights

Apparently there’s a new “drug” sweeping the universe at the moment. It’s called “i-dosing”. It’s the process of putting on headphones and listening to music that apparently induces a state of ecstasy. I know, sounds fucked up, right? These MP3’s are freely available and suggest that you “maybe lie down” and “relax” before closing your eyes and allowing the “music” to give you auditory and visual hallucinations.

Want a “hit”…

I’ve just got a hilarious picture in my head of a shady looking guy standing on a dark street corner, shiftily opening his trenchcoat to passers by and asking “Here mate, after any MP3’s?” or “I’ve got some really good stuff here. Albums, singles even some b-sides. Got some bootlegs too, this 70’s stuff will really fuck your mind”.

Who knows if this “i-dosing” works and frankly who cares? Seems like just another internet craze. I have no desire to try it and i’m certainly not in a hurry to overdose on music just yet so i won’t be dabbling with this nonsensical idea any time soon. I’ll stick to Boards of Canada, Spacemen 3, Gold Panda and Aphex Twin as my “drug music”.

*I would just like to state that this post/article is not in anyway intended to condone or promote drug use.*

MP3: Marilyn Manson – I Don’t Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me)

THE MONDAY LIST #18: A Very Royal Variety

This has been been on my iPod non-stop…

Yes, i’ve recently rediscovered my love for Royal Bangs. In the midst of rediscovering it i had a thought……”wouldn’t it be cool to make a list of royal related bands?”.

So i did..

1. Queens Of The Stone Age – Do It Again
2. Port-Royal – The Photoshopped Prince
3. Pantha Du Prince – Stick To My Side (Feat. Panda Bear)

BONUS TRAX

Here’s some real royals………..

Ok, now this might offend some people although probably not as much as Prince Phillip does….

I remember reading about Yo Majesty a while ago, it’s not my kinda music really but they seem absolutely fucking nuts so that’s good enough for me.

I really couldn’t do a Royal list and even consider leaving this out….

THE MONDAY LIST #17: It Began In Africa

Unless you’ve been living on the moon for the past few weeks you’ll know that the World Cup is on. It is after all the single most watched sports event in on this planet of ours, with millions (billions if you believe FIFA) tuning in worldwide. You can’t escape it at the moment. Not that i’m complaining, i love it. But it’s everywhere. Every time you turn on the TV, every little advert that pops up online, every time you open the paper it’s there staring back at you. To be fair that is the case with most World Cups but this one even more so because it’s the first time it’s been held in Africa and it’s been celebrated just that little bit more. And so it should be.

Since the World Cup is now past the cat and mouse tactics of the group stages and is actually getting exciting it’s time to dedicate a post to it.  So to celebrate this momentous World Cup i’ve compiled a list of songs in honour of the great continent of Africa. I’m not gonna lie i could only come up with about 7 or 8 tracks i knew so i had to search for some more online and came across two Paul Simon and David Bowie tracks i could use. The first songs that came to mind for the list were the obvious ones by Toto, Errors, The Very Best, Leftfield and The Chemical Brothers then there were one or two i found by searching my external hard drive then i got stuck and reverted to Google. The song that actually made me think of doing the post was “Bloemfontein” by a band i’ve just got into called Junior Fencing Club (post more soon). I was listening to them on the way to work this morning and the idea came to me to do an African based post after seeing the song title. For those unaware,  The Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein is one of the venues used during the World Cup and is coincidentally the stadium at which Germany beat England 4-1 yesterday 🙂 Apologies to any English readers but with me being half Scottish half German you can imagine that i was very, very happy with that result.

Africa List
—————–

1. Leftfield and Afrika Bambaataa – Afrika Shox
2. Chemical Brothers – It Began In Afrika
3. Air – African Velvet
4. Toto – Africa
5. Errors – A Rumour In Africa
6. Trentemoller – African People
7. J Dilla – African Rhythms
8. The Very Best (feat Ezra Koenig) – Warm Heart of Africa
9. Paul Simon – Under African Skies
10. David Bowie – African Night Flight

BONUS TRACKS:

MP3: Junior Fencing Club – Bloemfontein

MP3: The Housemartins – Johannesburg

As another bonus i thought i’d put in a bit about this man….

Mr Lucas Radebe. He’s so much more than a footballer. He’s a national hero in South Africa where he holds almost god like status among the fanatical football fans. He’s also the influence behind (i shudder to say the name cos i HATE the frontman) the Kaiser Chiefs. Yes, this pain in the arse of a band are all Leeds United fans. Radebe played for Leeds United for almost a decade and was their favourite player so they decided to name their band after Radebe’s first club a South African team named Kaizer Chiefs. So, it was with the swift swapping of an “S” for a “Z” (probably to avoid legal wrangles) and the band formerly known as “Parva” (Parva? Kinda fucking name is that anyway?) became the Kaiser Chiefs and proceeded to irritate the ears of the world.

The Good Kaizer Chiefs

The Irritating, Evil Kaiser Chiefs

Ok, so maybe i’m being a bit harsh. It’s not the actual band i have this massive dislike for, it’s just the main dude. Singer Ricky Wilson looks and acts like an overweight, arrogant, smarmy, chipmunk on speed. I’m not and never will be a fan of the group, i don’t really like their music, it doesn’t do anything for me but seeing as i’ve verbally denounced them so much tonight i suppose it’s only fair they get a song up.

It could’ve been worse for them. They should be grateful that Lucas Radebe’s team before signing for Leeds wasn’t a club called Moroka_Swallows. Sounds more like an African XXX effort than a football team.

Just for the record, my money’s on Argentina for the World Cup. I stand to when a fair old amount of crispy notes if they win it.

THE MONDAY LIST #16: My Own Summer

I’m sure most of you are aware that today is the summer solstice. The day when the sun stands still. The longest day of the year when the summer is at its brightest.

Todays solstice has certainly lived up to it’s billing so far, it’s been yet another fantastic day weather wise. So to celebrate the summer getting into full swing and the beginning of the long, long summer nights, barbecues and parties here is a list of summer based tracks i had lying around on the laptop. They vary from summer holidays through to summer romance and more.

SUMMER SOLSTICE
————————-
1. Wavves – Summer Goth
2. Girl Talk – Summer Smoke
3. Refused – Summerholiday Vs. Punkroutine
4. Raindear – Childhood Memories Of Summer
5. Incubus – Summer Romance (Anti-Gravitiy Love Song)
6. Avi Buffalo – Summer Cum
7. Crocodiles – Summer Of Hate
8. The Manhattan Love Suicides – Indian Summer
9. Singapore Sling – Summer Garden
10. Taking Back Sunday – You’re So Last Summer

Bonus track:
MP3: The Unwinding Hours – Solstice

Summer also means festivals. Sadly though this year will be the first year since 200o that i have missed T in the Park. In previous years i’ve also managed to take in summer festivals in Germany and Austria. Both were unforgettable experiences. In fact the only musical festivities i’ll be taking in this year is that of the West End Festival  in Glasgow.

I suppose it’ll be a nice change and for once i won’t have to wake up boiling hot and hungover in a tiny polyester tent……….who am i kidding? I’m gonna miss it big time. Festivals made my summer to an extent but the new house takes priority this year and if i’m lucky i may be able to fit in a big festival of some sort at the end of the summer or maybe even September. There’s always ATP as well at the end of the year.

MP3: Deftones – My Own Summer

Summer also brings that old tingling warm sensation, literally. It’s called sunburn and a few of my friends have already been “lobsterified” this summer. So has this dude below, why is he still smiling!? Feel the burn!

OUCH!

MP3: Muse – Sunburn

Summer Can Do Strange Things To A Man

Ps. Today is also my big sister Lisa’s birthday. 29 today! I’ve tx and phoned her so i might as well go for the treble and wish her a good one on here as well, Happy Birthday Lis! xxxx

She’s away on holiday at the moment so i gave her the prezzies a few days back. Among them was Iggy and The Stooges “Raw Power” Special Edition. A fine choice if you ask me.

THE MONDAY LIST #14: Around The World In One List

Music loves the world. And the world loves it back. Some bands have decided to combine the two. Observe….

Around The World In One List
—————————————
MP3’s

1. Boards of Canada – Seven Forty Seven
2. Air France – Collapsing At Your Doorstep
3. Heroes of Switzerland – Soaring
4. Portugal. The Man – Lovers In Love
5. The Strange Death Of Liberal England – A Day Another Day
6. Everything Is Made In China – Automatic
7. Zoo Brazil – Technik
8. USA Is A Monster – All Or Nothing
9. Forward Russia – Breaking Standing
10. Atmosphere Italy – Baltic Fly

Bonus Track: (I had to include these guys simply for not attempting to mix a country into some sort of band name but instead just deciding to call themselves after it. That’s dedication. Oh and they’re Swedish by the way….)

MP3: Liechtenstein – This Must Be Heaven

One thing i’m interested in is the reason behind the names. Some i know about and some i’m having a wild stab at.

My favourite Scottish knob twiddlers (there’s another “that’s what she said” moment for you, Emma) Boards of Canada were inspired by the documentaries made by the National Film Board of Canada.

With the blissful Air France being Swedish i can only assume they liked flying with the French airline company so much that they honoured the name.

Heroes of Switzerland are actually noisey guys from Nottingham, but i’m guessing they probably have a thing for Toblerones. Then again, who doesn’t?

Portugal. The Man, well that’s obvious isn’t it? No, you’re right it isn’t. But this goes some way to explaining it the reason behind the cult indie legends name.

“A country is a group of people,” guitar player and vocalist John Gourley explains. “With Portugal, it just ended up being the first country that came to mind. The band’s name is ‘Portugal’. The period is stating that, and ‘The Man’ states that it’s just one person.”  The name has more personal meaning as well: Portugal. The Man was going to be the name of a book that Gourley had planned to write about his father and his many adventures.

The Strange Death Of Liberal England is easy. The diverse band named themselves after a book of the same title.

Everything Is Made In China. A Russian post-rock band who sing in English but have China in their name. Nice. Covering all the bases then guys? The music is rather good though.

The Scandanavian electro DJ duo Zoo Brazil is one that baffles me. A love of the Amazon Rainforest maybe?

USA Is A Monster doesn’t need much explaining. These loud, bold, noise bringers obviously have a very strong opinion of their own country.

Forward Russia are/were an English indie punk band with a habit (up until 2006) of naming songs simply with numbers. The name? No idea. A battle cry perhaps? I met them once, i probably should’ve asked.

Atmosphere Italy are from Italy and they do…eh….”atmospheric” music? No. That’s only half true. They are Italian but they’re more Balearic Disco House (bordering cheesy at points) than atmospheric.

Swedish indie folk group Liechtenstein just went the whole hog and said “fuck it, we’re stealing that country”

VIDEOS:

There were too many to choose from for Japan. Japandroids, Japan, Japanther, Japanese Popstars, Japanese Motors…

I finally settled on Japanther cos i haven’t listened to them in years and forgot how good this song is.

Japanther – Divorce

Future Kings Of Spain – Face I Know

Maps Of Norway – Traffic

So that was a short musical trip around the globe. I quite liked the subject. I think for the next Monday list i’m going to do a list based on cities. Should be fun.

THE MONDAY LIST #13: Unlucky For Some….

Seeing as this is the thirteenth Monday List i thought i’d just roll with the numbers and do a list of unlucky related songs. Ok, here goes….

Unlucky For Some….
——————————-

1. Black Cat #13 – Ingest with Water
2. Mystery Jets – Umbrellahead
3. Patrick Wolf – Magpie
4. Pixies – No.13 Baby
5. The Cribs – Mirror Kissers
6. Fu Manchu – Evil Eye
7. Hot Chip – Bad Luck
8. Caspian – The Raven
9. Elliott Smith – Thirteen
10. Korn – Shoots and Ladders
11. Queens Of The Stone Age – Walkin’ On The Sidewalks
12. Tasharg – The Seven Year Itch
13. Wu Tang Clan – Dog Shit

The only things i could think of which were bad luck related were black cats, the number 13, walking under ladders, opening an umbrella indoors, walking on the cracks in the pavement, breaking a mirror, magpies, ravens and i wasn’t sure if standing in dog faeces is unlucky or lucky. I think it varies from culture to culture. Personally i think it’s a bit of both….it’s obviously quite unlucky to stand in it but then again surely your day can only get better if you tread in shit so it could be kinda lucky i suppose. Dunno really.
