The 17

I’ve been into Bill Drummond since i first heard the KLF back in the 90’s, i’m a big fan of his music and of his writings. He is an extremely interesting character, a cavaliering eccentric i like to think, and i’m always eager to hear whatever he has to say, good or bad, about music from the past, present and indeed the future.

About a year ago i bought a book he wrote called “The 17”. In short, it’s about Bill Drummond analysing music and its past, what it’s become and what it’s likely to turn into. He also questions our and his own ideas and attitudes to music. His experiences and beliefs in music led him to form “The 17”. “The 17” is a choir with no music to back them up, just voices. Acappella basically. I don’t want to go into a big long spiel about it and how good it is so i’ll let you discover it yourself by having a read through the website. It’s full of everything you need to know, including events, tours, news etc.

Sometime around last summer, i also bought a collection of postcards that were part of the project of “The 17”. This collection included 25 postcards. 23 of those postcards were scores that the 17 would be performing, the other two were blanks postcards which were designed so that the buyer could write his own score and mail it to “The 17”. I haven’t done so yet but i’ve decided this week that i’m going to make an attempt at writing one and mailing it.

All the scores are on the website. The original scores are there as are the ones submitted by fans. It makes for interesting reading. There’s also some really really good graffiti.

Here’s two of the more famous tracks by The KLF..

MP3: The KLF – What Time Is Love?

VIDEO: The KLF – 3AM Eternal

Did i mention that Bill Drummond once burned a million pounds? I’m not sure if that makes him criminally insane or some sort of mad genius. Either way he’s one of a kind and i’m thankful he’s still got an interest in the music industry. It’d be a duller place without him.
